Coffee - how I miss thee

Recommended Posts

I fell of the coffee wagon. I was good since October 25th when my pre-surgery diet started (which was only one week).

This morning, I had a sip of coffee!!!

My husband had to go to work this morning and I got up just when he left. He had left about an 1/8 of a cup of coffee in the pot and I stared at it for a few minutes. And then I though - what the hell, let's have it. So I took one of my espresso cups and poured in the left over (less than half an espresso cup), topped it off with a little milk and.......BLISS

I am 5 weeks out, and I have to admit that I am amazed at how little I miss caffeine once I was over the withdrawal. I am actually wondering if I should pick up my old coffee habit at all but then at other times, I just miss a cup of coffee so much, the smell, the warm cup, the pretty tan color once I put my milk in.

I always thought I drink coffee mostly for the flavor, but when I try to substitute with Decaf, it just isn't the same. But when I drink, I am not sure I can actually tell by the taste that it is decaf.

Cutting out pop is no big deal, even though I loved my Diet Vault. Coffee on the other hand plays a much bigger part in my life - I loved coffee way before I loved food.< /p>

Sorry, just had to rant - have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Susanne

I totally know what you mean. I forced myself to switch to Decaf BEFORE surgery because I do love my coffee. I've found that if I drink a decaf "flavored" coffee then it makes up for the difference of missing caffeine. I still get my "fix" but I won't have to worry about getting an ulcer or it damaging my little sleeve. I waited until I was 4 weeks post-op then resumed drinking my decaf.

I made my hubby switch too, but it wasn't a struggle because he is getting sleeved soon, so he needed to switch with me anyway. The amount of coffee I drink now is less than my one cup per day pre-sleeve cup. I still fill my all the way but can never seem to finish it. lol. I guess I need to switch to half a cup and then I won't be wasting it.

Side note...is there a way to follow your blog? I've read it a few times and tried to follow it so that it shows up on my blog roll, but I can't seem to figure it out. Let me know...thanks!

I was a 40oz a day coffee drinker pre-op. But, I cut it out because of the "diuretic" effect immediately post-op when hydration is so important. Least to say, I picked up coffee again, and have a minimum of 20-24oz a day with full fat french vanilla Creamer and splenda. It helps keep me regular as well. I've never had any issue with it causing problems with my sleeve, no burning, no acid afterwards, and my surgeon wasn't concerned with coffee consumption after the healing period and once I was able to get in my full Fluid requirements I was back to having my coffee. I think of coffee as an experience as well, it's not just the taste, it's everything about that little cup of joe that makes me happy.

thank for the info... I have never liked coffee, however, in the last 4-6 months I have enjoyed a cup in the morning with the flavored no fat creamer.. no sugar.. I guess I could give it up if I need to but I do enjoy it.. I don't even think it gives me energy like some people say that they can't get on with the day until they cave their coffee... Tyf... you are an inspirsation to us all... thanks for being yoiu..

I am glad I am not alone.

@Mommy (and man, that is weird calling you Mommy), I think if you scroll down, there is a box called Meta, which has two links for Entry RSS and Comment RSS. That should allow you to add it to your blogroll

@NBFlo, I believe it is about the fresh surgical wound and caffeine, which can cause ulcers or so? Same for alcohol and I believe I am supposed to stay away from both for 3 months.

@Tiff, when did you pick it up again?

I cut out coffee somewhat before surgery but picked up it again after. I only drink maybe 3 cups a week but it has never given me trouble.

I honestly don't remember when I started drinking it again. Probably close to 6 weeks post-op, I drank a lot of the herbal tea with half and half and splenda in the beginning.

Ok, I guess today is officially cheat day. We went to the cookie drive at my SIL's church and had too buy a bucket of Cookies and together with the cookies I am having another cup of coffee (espresso size cup).

I keep thinking that on the end it is just liquid, and I don't think my staple line should be that "raw" that the touch of 1oz. of coffee has repercussions. I know neither of you can make recommendations, and my surgeon seems overly cautious but I am sticking to his recommendation and am still on full liquids and will be until 12/14. He keeps me off soft foods for 6 weeks - I feel like I am really coddling my sleeve compared to other folks on here. It's like home schooling vs. public schools, lol.

I am about to quit drinking coffee, and I have to say.... it's a bit scary. I've had coffee every day of my adult life except for when deathly sick. Even when I go camping, I bring dried coffee crystals!! This one will be a bit tough! :-)

I agree, there seems to be such a variation. My dr requires full liquids (not just clears) for the first 2 wks. All i wanted to know was when the coffee could enter the picture again. lol

I'm being sleeved in 4 days. I figure i'd start to cut out the caffeine today...but around 10am i started to get a headache, and being we can't take ibuprofen or aleve, etc... I decided i needed to at least have a small cup. I don't know how this withdrawal thing will work, but at least if I have pain meds after surgery, that will help with the headache. haha

i do have about one small coffee a day... im not worried abut my intake because I know that drinking coffee regularly actually helps to reduce the chances of producing gall stones... and its actually the caffeine in the coffee as well as the Beans that help to avoid them.... I have never had any acid reflux from drinking coffee or any foods for that matter... Im counting myself pretty lucky

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
