Kandi 1 week post op

Recommended Posts

Hello Kandi here I'm new the VSG board. I had my surgery on November 23 2010 weighing 335 pre op 350. I live in Grand Rapids MI and Dr. Randall Baker of Grand Health partners performed my surgery. I couldn't ask for a better surgeon or better care at spetrum health Blodgett. I am one week post op and I have went through a series of emotions. I was excited to thinking how easy the recovery is and then back to what in the World have i done to by body. I have been on the liquid diet and I am having a hard time getting the Protein down but I am working on it. I also have flu like symptoms needless to say that is where the doubt has came from. GHP provides your supplements for the two weeks but I am so tired of after taste. I have never wanted some cream of wheat or eggs SO BAD!!! I guess I need someone to tell me it gets better.

It 100% gets better day by day week by week! The first week or two are the hardest but you need to just trudge through them with a positive aditude knowing that you have done the right thing for you.

Hi Kandi,

I was sleeved on the same day as you. I am not sure what you mean by supplements, I was sent home on a full liquid diet. I can have juice, Jello (sf) creamed Soups strained, Water and other full liquids. I too have had some head hunger, like last night I seen subway sandwich on tv and I thought ohh that would be great to bite into, but then I checked my stomach, no hunger and I know I would have to chew the heck out of that one bite of sandwich just to get it to go down and know just from what it feels like when eating Jello and Soup that it would not be comfortable. I just tell myself Oh well just think what this lack of food well look like on the scale! I am still amazed at how I have to remember to eat! If not for thirst I might forget all together. I find this all and incredible freedom and I know these early steps and not forever.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
