I am two weeks and two hours out of surgery. And honestly, until I saw your post, I forgot that I had the drain removed 8 days ago. It sucked for the 5 days that it was in. I caught it on things walking around a few time, and pulled some stitches. And I think that it amplifies the gas and abdominal discomfort that you feel after surgery. But think about it, 14 days and I feel 3 years younger, at least. And my doctor said that I was one of the biggest whiner and wimps that he's had go through the procedure!

You have to realize that you will feel so much better so soon that it's honestly a miracle. I know it won't last forever, but my ability to control my cravings and not feel hungry all the time is the best drug I can imagine. Even if the drain and the bloating and the incisions hurt more than they do, I'd still say it was totally worth it.

I had my surgery in Mexico and had a drain and had to take it out myself when I got home. I was SOOOOO scared. I begged my Dr. to PLEASE take it out because I was so afraid of having to do it myself, but he wanted it to be in for while I traveled home. After flying all day with it I was so ready for that thing to be out of me. As soon as I got home from the airport I took a shower, snipped the stitch and whipped that baby out. It was a weird "snake swimming in your belly" feeling but it didn't hurt at all. I think it helped that I took a shower before taking it out because the skin around it was soft and hadn't begain healing around the tube.

Try not to worry about this part of the surgery. I know that's a lot easier said than done. Honestly, and this might be a little too much information for everyone, but the worse part of my entire VSG experience (so far) was the yeast infection I developed after being on the antibiotics from surgery for so long.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
