Lap Band in British Columbia

Recommended Posts

I'd like to start a thread naming surgeons in British Columbia.

I googled, I searched, I checked the yellow pages. It isn't easy finding a surgeon in BC.

So I'd like a list to help others searching.

I am being banded by

Leung W M Dr

13798 94A Ave 200, Surrey, BC V3V1N1

(604) 581-2515

Dr. Woodhead

Ladner, BC

(604) 946 6500.

Dr. Amson

Victoria BC

I can't BELIEVE there aren't any surgeons in the interior of BC, (where I live) So surgery and fills will have to be planned very carefully and travel is necessary.

Please list any other BC surgeons. Dr. Leung is near retirement, and I will hvae to find a fill doctor replacement one day.

SEE? It's slim pickins in British Columbia.

I can't believe how hard it is to find someone, and not feel like you have to travel to another province or another country.:)

Hey there,

I live in Calgary and I researched Canada wide. I'm going to Mexico for my surgery. Alot of factors played into that reasoning for me. There is the Big center in Toronto that a few Canadians on here have gone to and they all have great things to say. There are a group of surgeons here who are hoping to be through all the red tape and doing surgeries by the end of the summer however there is a waiting list of 35 or 40 people at this point and they are planning to do 4 surgeries a month at first which means I would be waiting about 8 months and working with doctors who don't have many bands under their belt. I am going to use the doctor here for my fills. He is aware that I am going to Mexico for the surgery and agrees that the choices in Canada are limited. Ultimately when I evaluated everything I decided that Mexico was the right choice for me. Toronto is still a plane ride away for me so getting fills there is unrealistic. I weighed the cost of both places as well as experience. I'm going to a Dr. who has done a couple thousand lapbands so I feel confident in his abilities. The cost is 8700 and that includes Hotel and airport pickup and drop off and anything associated with the surgery. The facility is new. I have to pay for my flight to San Diego. Honestly when I considered everything the money was a consideration....not the only consideration of course and Toronto was out of my price range by about 6,000 dollars.

Just my wo cents worth..8)

Hey there,

I'm getting Dr. Mitchell to do my fills. He is one of the Dr.s that is going to be doing the lapband. He has been doing fills for patients who have gotten their surgery else where. He sometimes tends to be hit and miss so he said that sometimes he has sent patients on to the hospital for their fill when he is having a hard time. He charges 100.00.

I was told that there should be a dvd ready soon, that is being made....hmm...I believe at the TLBC that they are willing ship out to Doctors if a family doctor is willing to learn how to do a patients fills...I'm not sure when it will be available though.

See now THAT Is interesting. I'd really like to know more.

What is TLBC?

Does that mean my regular doctor can give fills?

TLBC: Toronto Lap Band Centre The website is www.tlbc.ca

Yes, they have an instructional video that you can give to your regular Doctor (ie. if you live too far away to go to the ones at TLBC) that teaches them how to do a fill. I live about 2 hrs away so I choose take the time to drive to Toronto for the fills. I feel more comfortable having the "experts" do the fill than having my regular doctor (who would learn from a video) doing it. But I believe it is a good option for those people who just live too far away to get their fills in Toronto (ie. if they had it done at TLBC).

Time2Live,

Do you mind if i ask which Dr. you chose in Mexico?

I had originally decided to go there, too, but opted for Toronto for my family's peice of mind. (regretting it a bit at this point)

My date is July 5th. (If I keep it)

Just curious...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
