Guest Tied2BeFit Posted April 20, 2004 Hello. I was banded 3/9 and so far I've lost about 17 pounds. I was thinking this was kind of slow, but maybe not. I go for a follow up today and hope that my doctor will recommend a fill to speed things up. I feel like I can eat way too much before getting full. I've pretty much given up bread because it just doesnt feel good going down and I've had things get stuck 3 or 4 times. This only happens when I drink Water with my meal (I keep forgetting not too). Has anyone had a problem with colas? I havent had one in almost 2 months and I would love to just take a sip. I've heard that carbonated beverages are not good for gastric patients. Thanks in advance for the information.
msknow 0 Posted April 20, 2004 I haven't had the surgery yet, but I definately heard that cola isn't a good thing. I think the gas will make you uncomfortable. I'm not sure. Congrats on the weight loss, though!!
Guest j2blsd2bbig Posted April 21, 2004 I was told that due to the empty calories that you get from soda that it will only slow down your weight loss. I was also told that cola can stretch out your stomach and make it bigger. Overall if soda works good on cleaning batteries of car, it must not be good for people in general. I don't know of any product used on a car that could be good for my overall health.

Alexandra 55 Posted April 22, 2004 I, like many people, was not given any instructions to avoid soda. My doctor said that anything I like and can tolerate is fair game, but I may find that some things don't go down well or don't sit well once they're down. I have tried carbonated drinks a couple of times, and there is a HUGE difference in the way they feel going down now compared to pre-banding. It's strange and I think if I drank more than a sip or two it would get uncomfortable quickly. So I just steer clear, but it's a matter of choice for me, not rules. (I'll also just say in passing that when people ask about soda I always assume they're asking about diet soda. There's no reason to assume that people are thinking about high-calorie drinks when they ask about sodas.)
Guest Tied2BeFit Posted April 22, 2004 Thank you to each and everyone that replied. Like Alexandra I was told by my doctor that I could eat or drink anything that I could tolerate. It was only in my research that I found that carbonated beverages could cause medical problems and I wasnt sure if this information was directed to all gastric patients or bypass patients specifically. Of course I wouldnt go through the surgery and not follow the rules which is why I was inquiring. Thanks again for the information. Tied2BeFit
nightingale2u 42 Posted April 22, 2004 Yep... for me there is no other type of soda... I can't imagine drinking anything else but diet. I am trying to completely eliminate any carbonated beverages from my diet prior to my surgery... one less thing to adapt to. Congrats Tied on your weight-loss... looks like you are headed down a successful road! Darcy
ihvbzs 0 Posted April 22, 2004 I was banded on 3/8 and I am down 25 pounds but my DR told me last week that I have a large loss in that short time . He said that 25 pounds is usually 2- 2 1/2 months out. He said I should be happy with 6-8 lbs a month and as long as I am losing at that rate that I really don't need a fill. I do have alot of restriction though without a fill so I am not considering it yet. I really don't want to lose too fast and I am ready for it to slow down now a bit.........that is one of my reasons for choosing band over by-pass........I want to save my skin and muscles as much as I can & at age 51 I think a slower loss will help me do that and that I will look healther. As far as the cola goes.....I was told it will stretch the new stomach as will caffeine and I wouldn't take a chance that a drink could mess up the loosing process. I do know of people that take the fizz out and drink it flat !! Good luck in your journey !!
