PreOp Liquid Diet KILLING ME!!!

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled for my Gastric Sleeve procedure on December 6, 2010. I'm both nervous and excited! I just started my PreOp liver shrinking liquid diet and it is going to kill me! lol I am 5'11" and weigh 310lbs. I love eating obviously! The only things I am allowed to eat now are sugar free Jello, light yogurt, broths, Water, sugar free popcicles, and Isopure Protein Drinks. Thanksgiving is this coming Thursday and my doc says he will allow me to eat ONE SUPER light meal that day. He's talking 2 bites out of each thing! lol I refuse to cheat other than that but the lack of calories and caffine is giving me headaches already and I'm exhausted! I need words of advice to help me make it through this. It kills me that I'm already struggling and I haven't even had the procedure yet. I don't want to struggle this early in the game.

Sounds like you are going through carb and caffeine withdrawels, this will get better after a few days usually no m ore then a week depending on your previous diet. My best advise is to pre warn peopple you will be around that your mood may not be all that great and you may have a short fuse take some advil and just know that it will get better with time and you will be sleeved before you know it. Good Luck and let us know how everything goes

You know, it's a struggle at the beginning. I have to do the same pre-op diet in a couple of weeks, and I am trying to slowly get my calories and caffeine levels down so that it's not so bad. But, I think it's harder at the beginning ALWAYS, so don't think you are failing because you are struggling now. It's just an adjustment, and it'll get a bit easier as your body realizes it's not getting any food! I am rather hungry right now on the South Beach diet, so I feel you!

Every Doctor is different in what they want their patients to do pre-op. Some want high Protein, low carb/fat liquid diet (wanting to shrink the liver), others want 2 Protein shakes and a lean cuisine for dinner. Other's just go on the phase one south beach diet.

I think it all works, it is just what the Doctor wants.

I had to do a pre-op diet for about 7 days and the day before my surgery I called to ask the Nut there if I could please have something more substantial as my last meal. She gave me the go ahead for Soup and salad, I had refried Beans and tortillas lol. I have to say though that post op dieting was A TON easier then pre-op phase because I did not feel so great after surgery and could fit very little down and was full with the liquids. I was more the ready by the time stage two came around for those mushies and those kept me full and happy too. I am now 14 weeks out and having head hunger more often, I think it is because of the time of the year and such. I just think pre-op you don't have the tool to make eating less satisfying so it is a lot easier, hunger wise, to do the post op.

If I get approval from insurance, I'll be starting my PRE OP diet the day of your surgery. I'm nervous about that! LOL

Good luck!

Not all dr's require a pro op diet and there is debate weather or not it helps I personaly believe that it helps you get used to the way you will be eating after surgery and it gets you through the sugar withdrawels with out the added strain of recovery. For my pre op I was on a 1200 cal low carb high protien diet up till 10 days before surgery then it was 4 shakes and on lettuce salad with lemon juice and then all clears the day before surgey. There really are alot of different pre op diets, if you search pre op diet you can research them on here and then modify one for your self if you feel it would help you. Good Luck and let us know how your surgery goes.

I am on day 3 of the preop diet....Yes, I have had a few moments of weakness but I HAVE NOT giving into the urges. I can have low fat cream Soups including Tomato Soup. I think this is the life saver for me as this is a bit more filling but I am eating every 2 hours also as I am currently a diabetic but after discussing this diet with my PCP Dr, I am not taking any prescriptions or my sugar level would drop to low. So far so good. 3 more days then 1 day clear liquids....Surgery is Dec 1st. My husband had me go out shopping yesterday for a while so he could eat his frozen Boston Market Turkey dinner since I could cannot eat so I wouldn't have to smell it. You can do this, just take if one day at a time.

My wife tried the slim fast drinks. She said there gross. I use EAS advantcarb and Promasil Protein shakes. Find a shake that you can handle first. Another thing is Soups will help. Like Tomato basil and cream Soup. And dont forget about the 3 days of clears. For clears I did chinese takeout Soups and I tried Isopure but thats gross. After surgery Water, apple juice, crystal lite was the main things but SF popcicles was my savior.

The main thing is how much to you enjoy food? After this is done everything changes. My mind changed for sure. I use to enjoy eating out and trying out new things now its just sucks. I can make a health concious salad eating woman go mad on the amount of food I eat compared to them. 3 forks and done. Makes them feel like they are pigging out lol.

I say do it for weightloss. Food isnt a nessesity in my book anymore. But remember there will be a trade off. Your gonna trade food for something else. In my case fishing thank god.

Just think I am 5'9" and 267 right now. I already lost 63lbs in 2 months and I did my surgery in Mexico with no complications to report other than a rash that came and gone @ 1 month out "I dont know if it was related or not, doc said it was just contact dermititus".

Goodluck on your venture. Nikes logo is "Just do it" ;)

Do u know which slim fast she likes best? Also for the soups ... Is that canned or home made? I went groceries shopping with the list of 1200 cal and it was not easy . I started to feel anxious about the new way of eating and my old habits. My kids are saying the will do it with me -give up the bad stuff- husband is not very supportive. ;( won't even touch the subject.

She didnt like any of the slimfasts unfortunately. The Atkins shakes arent to bad. Its better if you have a sams or costco membership because bulk is a little cheaper. Plus when purchasing shakes...CHECK THE EXPIRATION DATE... I bought a 4pk and they were like pudding. Grossed me out.

Soups are homemade. Thats pretty much the best way to get the best quality. They have a few good recipes online. One batch lasts awhile..well for me now everything lasts forever

As far as 1200 calories a day. 2 17oz EAS myoplex 300 calories each. Add a meal like crab au gratin 440 calories or a 80/20 4oz hamburger plus cheese, lettuce, Tomato with no bread 380 calories. Its not that hard to get it in theoretically. Can I? No way. My max is 800 calories and most of the time its lower.

Dont beat yourself up on your prediet. Cause postop. food haha your gonna quit wanting to cook. To me its a useless waste of time to eat. I know that I must so i do but do I ever want to? No way. I havent been hungry since Feb15th, 2012 lol

They are going to conform to the new you one way or the other. Trust me on this.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
