NO PROTEIN POST OP?!?!?!?

Recommended Posts

Does this sound right? The first two weeks post op instructions say clear sugar free liquids. A 'thin" (clear liquid) Protein supplement may be taken if feeling week or hungry after fluids are taken. But for the most part if full on SF liquids, no protein supplements are to be taken. I always thought you NEEDED protein to heal.

LOL, you will be healing for several months, and you WILL need Protein to heal, and to lose weight. But by far the most important factor early out is to stay hydrated, MUCH more important that getting protein this early. Dehydration can land you in the hospital within a few days. Tomorrow morning you might want to just call your doctor's office, and always the first advice is to go with what they say, but it sounds about right to me.

My plan says Clear Liquids for 2-3 days after surgery. Isopure clear is ok. I think you should call your doctor, not as us as you Dr. is the one who knows what you need to do so soon after surgery. Congrats on getting the sleeve by the way!

I am on clear for a full week after surgery (tomorrow is 1 week!) and then I'm supposed to start Full liquids for 2 weeks after that! My doc was very clear that this first week I didn't need to care about anything but getting in WATER!!! Each doc is different and each has their way of doing things and I would assume that he/she knows what it takes for the sleeve to heal and for you to loose weight!! Good Luck!

Usually Isopure is considered a "clear" Protein. I think I would call and ask. I was given Isopure in the hospital (the day after surgery) and I used it for a while during the week following surgery.

The Unjury brand chicken Soup is considered clear liquid and tastes very good, satisfying and has 20 grams of Protein. My first day post op they gave me 3 of these in the hospital and I managed to get 2 1/2 down throughout the whole day. I've been drinking them now even on the full liquid diet. My NUT and Dr said these also count as you Fluid for the day too. That makes it easier to get everything in because if you have 3 throughout the day you get 60grams of protein and 1/3 of the fluid requirements.

I already have thin hair due to PCOS and I had told my Dr about my concern about losing more. He said if I keep up on my protein and Vitamins that it will help reduce the amount that I will lose. That's why I've been trying to find ways to get the most of what goes into my tiny tummy.

Kelli :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
