My Surgery Story

Okay so here's my story! I got to the hospital at 0530 on Monday morning and got checked in. Was put in a gown and got an IV started. From there we went down to the surgery pre-op where I waited and waited! They came in and drew some blood then I had to give a urine sample as well! So finally the doc comes in and we chat for a few mins about everything and I tell her I'm ready to go! When they finally came and gave me some meds through my IV I had been laying in bed in the pre-op area for 2 hours!!! I drifted off and don't remember a thing until I woke up in recovery! When waking up there was some pain but I know now that it wasn't pain from surgery it was gas pain from all the air they put in me! I got some good drugs though and the wheeled me up to my room! Shane was there for just a little bit before he had to go get Paxton but it was nice to see his face! I was still just really out of it and would wake for brief moments while they were taking my temp, blood pressure and so on. Later that night they wanted me to stand up and move around! I KNEW this was going to be BAD, it always is with me the first time getting up! So I get sat up on the edge of the bed and I was telling the nurse I was dizzy and nauseous but he insisted I stand up! WOAH, that did it, I was drenched in sweat right away and started to topple over!! They put me back in bed! THANK YOU! I told you it wasn't time for me to be up yet! LOL About midnight the overnight nurse thought we should try it again and this time wasn't as bad. Still a little light headed and nauseous but not as bad and I was able to sit up in the chair for a big and brush my teeth! At this point thought my temp was really starting to rise and that worried them a bit so back in bed I go! Around 2am my temp reached 102 so they tried to have me drink some liquid Tylenol! UGH! NOT GOOD! I got two VERY SMALL sips off it and totally felt like vomiting! They ended up giving me more meds and more fluids through the IV to see if they would help! By Tuesday morning, I was totally feeling better but still not great by no means. I got out of bed a few more times to go walk around the halls since the HORRIBLE gas pains were not letting up! There was like one big bubble that moved from right under my left breast up into my shoulder and back again (it's still there now too) and they say walking helps, so I walked as much as I could handle! Around 9am they came and took me down to do the swallow study to make sure there were no leaks! OMFG OUCH is all I can say!!!!!! I got in there and stood up on that dang machine and they gave me the huge cup of NASTY NASTY NASTINESS and made me take a "big" drink! Yuck for one, and OUCH for two! They said drink again, so another drink in and they are moving the thing around trying to see if the Fluid is going and OMG it hit me like a ton of bricks! PAIN PAIN PAIN!!!! The fluid wasn't draining so it was all just sitting right at the top of my stomach and not moving! That is seriously some of the worst pain I have ever felt! They quickly laid me and the table back and had me turn to each side and finally while on the left side they could see it starting to drain and the pain SLOWLY subsided! I SWEAR I will never eat or drink to fast because I NEVER want to feel that pain again! But all in all things were good, they didn't see anything leaks, but I was just really swollen and tight so they said it would be slow going for me. Tuesday night Shane brought Paxton up to see me which was nice! I missed my little girl! They also started me on drinking Water. 10cc a hour is what I needed to do and that was HARD! Picture 10cc of water? A tiny little medicine cup only filled about 1/4 of the way and I couldn't even drink that whole amount down in a hour?!?!?! CRAZY! Around 7pm my IV went bad so they took it out and I was thinking, GREAT, maybe I'll get to go home tomorrow, this is all good right? WRONG! By midnight I was so sick :( I was more nauseous then I have ever been. So they called the doc and she said, back on the IV I go! Of course, they had to stick me three times before they got one! Told them I was a hard stick! So they give me a different med which made me sleep! I was so thankful for that! So Wed. morning rolls around and still a little nauseous but not so bad. They really wanted me to focus on getting my water in, up to 60 cc (two med cups full) in an hour! By Wed. night I was able to accomplish this! YAY!!! I was also finally able to get up and shower on Wed. and walk around a lot more (still having the gas pains). Wed. night I was also able to have a popsicle!! It was cherry and OMG it was SO GOOD! LOL So I was off the IV and drinking my water and walking a lot! Got pretty sleepy early so off to bed I went! Slept pretty good expect for the temp checks and the heparin shots (btw those HURT and I have tiny little bruises all over my tummy from them)! Woke up this morning (Thursday) feeling pretty darn good (except of course the gas pains) and felt ready to come home! Walked, ate a popsicle and even had a little hot tea for breakfast! I liked the warm feeling going down! Again was able to shower and have them clean up the drain area with new tape and such. While doing so they showed me again how to empty the drain and I was missing a step the two times before and that might be why I have such gas pains today :( Might has got some air back in my tummy :( OUCH! But it's still nothing like what I'm sure it could be! I can totally handle my 60cc an hour and the doc said she still wants me on Clear fluids until I come see her on Monday! So it'll be water, tea, popsicles and broth throughout the weekend which right now is totally fine by me! I'm NOT hungry by no means! LOL So now I'm home and it sure does feel great to be in my own house! I have the chair all set up with pillows and my water and COMPUTER (gosh, I'm so addicted, I've missed my computer so much) and my puppy! (which totally wants on my lap but I won't let her)! Now I think I'll take a short nap and then get to doing some Work! I missed working :( That’s how much I LOVE my job and how totally depressed I am about losing it :(

Oh I did step on the scale when I got home and thus far I have lost 4.2 lbs in the past 4 days! So after the pre-surgery diet and everything I am now at 227 lbs! Only 77lbs more to go! LOL

YAY, welcome to the losers bench. It sounds like you had a bit of a time with your recovery. I am glad you are feeling better and that your body is responding like it should. It feels great to be home doesnt it? It is just so stressful to be in the hospital. I can't stand that place hehe. Congrats and keep us posted. Enjoy letting others wait on you a bit but remember to keep moving around as much as you can. If you have to do lung exercises make sure you do those crappy little things too! hheheheh

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
