Ok, so here it is, I am 29 years old, I am currently 6'2 and 435lbs. I was 575lbs in January but have lost 140lbs on my own and can no longer lose anything no matter what i do. I haven't been able to lose anymore for a couple months and finally decided I am sick of this yoyoing and need to make a change so I started researching wls and the only one I really feel good about is VSG and I don't know if I can have it. I am seeing the NP @ the surgeon's office on Friday and my GI tomorrow, but I am freaking out. I have GERD, Barrett's Esophagus, hiatal hernia, Crohn's Disease and a tumor in my small intestine(undetermined, what this is). I really can't take living like this anymore. I am supposed to start nursing school in March and need to get things going. But, I heard with Crohn's you can't have RNY and with Barrett's, you can't have VSG. What is a guy supposed to do? I don't know if anyone has gone through this, or had my plethora of problems, but I would appreciate any input, help, or support. Thanks in advance.

I will be curious to see what your doctor has to say on Friday. I have a friend who has Barretts and a VSG. she does have a lot of problems with acid Gerd etc, but it was caused by the band ruining her esophagus.

First of all, HUGE CONGRATS for losing so much on your own already!! That's an enormous accomplishment all by itself.

I'll be anxious to see what they tell you about the Barrett's as well. As far as the GERD goes, I had it bad before surgery, and when the doc got in there he found a hiatal hernia that we didn't know about (although I kind of suspected). That took him 10 minutes to fix, and I have not had one moment of heartburn or acid since, and I'm far from being the only one! So if the Barrett's doesn't prohibit the hernia from being fixed, and I don't know why it would, then hopefully it'll turn out that VSG is exactly the right thing for you. I hope so! Keep us in the loop! :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
