Hmmmmm, hard telling. Some people have it pretty rough for a week or two, others sail right through. I had it very easy and was out shopping on Day 4, but I think with still-sore abs and a drain tube and bulb dangling off the front of me (which you won't necessarily have, but it's a possiblity to think about), I probably would have been a little uncomfortable being on my feet for 3-4 hours holding my arms up. Never know until you try it, though!

What the heck is a bulb?

Some surgeons require their patient to have a drain that is left in when you leave the hospital. It is a tube coming out of your abdomen, that goes down into a "bulb"( the bulb is about the size and shape of the thing that people who take your blood pressure squeeze to pump the air into the cuff) there is adhesive that holds the bulb to your body. If you go home with a drain, it IS uncomforable (or I thought it was one of the worst parts of surgery, IMO) and akward, you need to wear soft pants, etc. to not irritate it. The purpose of the drain is to collect Fluid left over in your body cavity following surgery, so it serves a purpose, but definitely is not fun. I had a drain for 6 days following surgery and I thought it was pretty annoying. lol

Thanks for your explanation. It sounds horrible and I hope I don't have one. I have my doctor's visit this Thursday and I will have to ask him about the drain.

I vote NO. I went back to work a week after surgery and I sat and cried for the day, and then started feeling better as the days followed. If I had to stand I may have passed out as I was very weak.

So I would reschedule the surgery or the winter ball, or let someone else do hair for the ball.

It won't be fun, you'll feel like crap, and whatever money you make will not be worth your health. It would be too taxing in my opinion. You may have a good day or a bad day.

I think those that take off for 2 weeks are smartest.

It really just depends, as everyone reacts much differently to anything. Some have been able to go back to work after only a few days. Your job sounds very demading. If it were me, there would be no way I could do that on day 4 after surgery.

I really don't know... You can either chance it or pick a better day to have your sugery if you're very concerned.

I was still in hospital til day 5 postop, although only because surgeon was away. I could have gone home day 3 but I could not have stood and worked for 4 hours, esp doing lots of movements with arms like hairdryers would require.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
