Hi Everyone, I'm a little concerned about my stupid decision. I had Sleeve Plication on 10/22 and was really good about the liquid diets for the first week, but I felt hungry and miserable the entire time. I mean, sleepy, tired, hungry, like mental pain... On week 2, I started the full liquids, but by mid-week, I was already eating the mushy foods. By the end of the week, I was already eating regular foods of all kinds. I haven't felt much restriction of any kind. I just finished week 3 and have only lost 6 pounds. I can't seem to get rid of the hunger pangs (literally feel like I'm starving every 2 1/2 hours.) Did I screw everything up? What can I do to fix it? I was literally able to finish a whole roll of sushi for dinner last night, and today I was able to eat a good size of lasagna. I'm so frustrated with myself and disappointed.... HELP!

Hi Tania

How are you? I had my plication surgery on Monday 8th of November and I know what you mean about the hunger pangs. I live in the UK and had the surgery done in Prague where they don't give you the proton pump inhibitors (ppi's) that help alleviate acid and gas production and which your body may misinterpret as hunger. As I understand it the hunger you and I are having are a combination of leftover eating habits, the severe reduction in calorific intake, how your body functions in producing the hunger making hormone ghrelin (it may assist to read Dr Watkins posts on this matter) etc. Your stomach needs you to be gentle with it after such major surgery that is why they recommend the liquid and pureed diets, but even then if you're feeling able to chew/masticate your food without any negative symptoms then that can only mean good news on a wonderful recovery. The other thing is that you will lose weight faster on the liquid diet your body is intaking less calories and having to put less energy into the digestive process. With me currently dealing with the hunger pangs is a two fold process, first keeping my goals in mind and reminding myself that the surgery is just a tool the hard work has to be done by me... sort of bite the bullet time. Anyway I think its great that you have lost six pounds, remember everyone is different and loses weight differently, just try to follow the guidelines as best as you can and if not then ensure all your foods are low fat, that you try and take some ppi's and if unlike me you cannot access them then find distractions and slowly incorporate some activity into your schedule. By the way how much are you looking to lose?

Warm Regards

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
