Odors after surgery

Recommended Posts

I'm going to be very frank here. I have heard that people who have bypass surgery or DS have terrible bm/flatulance smells that are so terrible that the smell won't leave the room and will follow you around. Is that also true for VS?

Just want to know every part of what may happen on this journey, I don't like surprises of this nature....

Thanks,

Stephanie

Poop is poop, and a fart is a fart with VSG. The odor will be determined by what you eat. The only thing I notice is that when I eat a lot of white carbs, I get a little gassy, but it isn't any "stinkier" than what I experienced pre-op.

I definitely have more gas if I eat something with sugar. The way it was explained to me is that it's not in our stomach very long so it goes undigested into our intestines and causes gas. I have to be really careful of where I am and how close to people I am if I eat something

like candy.< /p>

Thank you for your answers. I am assuming that with the VS it's "routine bms" . I have been told the other types of surgeries cause a terrible odor for a year or longer. Mostly due to the food sitting in the bowels rather than the stomach. They say its so bad that they have to use a bio spray that is used in the hospital and even that doesn't work for some people, they have to get charcole underwear liners. I was so horrified to hear this that I was seriously thinking maybe this is not something that I would do. I'm so relieved to hear with VS this isn't the rule.

Thank you all so much, this forum is so valuable.

Stephanie

For some reason, I am much LESS gassy since I had surgery, but I'm no more "smelly" than before.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
