twoboysandagirl 109 Posted November 9, 2010 Having surgery soon...wondering what medication do you use for Migraines after surgery ? I used to get them monthly and lately they have been less frequent but just want to be prepared. I have been taking 800 mg of Ibprofen so I know that is not an option. thanks... emme2009 4 Posted November 9, 2010 I also get Migraines and would take Excedrin or Ibuprofren as a pre-op. Post-op I switched to Tylenol and it works well for me when I get a mild Migraine.< /p> I also started taking a preventative--Topamax and that has worked extremely well. I take it daily and it took about a month to build up in my system but it really helped. I have Maxalt on hand for out-of-control migraines. I was able to take the Tylenol immediately post-op as needed. I am still cautious (i.e. I don't take it daily), as I am with ANY medication and I was pre-op because too much of anything just can't be good Good luck to you! mommyofLDS 52 Posted November 10, 2010 I get terrible Migraines also, some that land me in the ER for demerol shots. Right now, I take Fiornal at home. I spoke to my surgeon about this, as I was very concerned about not being able to use NSAIDS. She told me that the amount of aspirin in Fiornal is very small, and that the benefit of use outweighed any risk. It works very well for me.
Stacy160 201 Posted November 10, 2010 I get one maybe once a year, and 800 mg. of Motrin is what I take every time. I get the warning signs (flashy lights, blind spots), and if I pop that the minute I realize it's coming, it at least keeps me functional. There's no reason you can't have NSAIDs with the sleeve, although your surgeon may not want you to have them when you're fairly early out and the staple line is still delicate... best to ask him/her specifically about it before it happens! myrori 55 Posted November 10, 2010 I have had Migraines for over 20 years. I use Imitrex nasal spray and it has been a life saver. I have not had to go to the ER for shots for over a year now!
