3 weeks of liquid diet presurgery...

Recommended Posts

Am I the only person here who's doctor has required 3 weeks of presurgical liquid diet? I am having a hard time already!!

My surgery is scheduled Aug 1. I am already hardcore dieting - keeping it under 1100 calories a day and have lost 10 lb already. I have to lose a total of 30 lb before my doctor will operate. And because my BMI is so high, in the 60's, I have to do liquid 3 weeks before surgery. I don't know to get through these next 42 days. :)

Any advice or motivation would be appreciated!!!!!

One day at a time. One meal at a time. One minute at a time if necessary.

Sorry I can be more help. Try to keep busy, it's the only thing that will really help.

So far I am getting through it one day at a time. I've only had one melt down and that was Sunday when everyone was BBQ'ing and I could smell the delicious odors everywhere I drove. But I made some egg beaters and a drop of salsa and had a party. lol

Kiana,

I was fortunate that my doctor didn't require a liquid diet prior to surgery. A lot of doctors do though. I know it's hard to stick with liquids. We all either pre op or post op had to stick with liquids for a while. Just keep remembering why you are doing this in the first place, to get healthy. You can do this! We are already in the middle of June and the time will fly. This is just a blink of an eye on your journey to a new you. Your surgery date will be here before you know it and you will start your banding journey with 30 pounds less to lose. Good luck!!

Kiana, no your not the only one!!! My doctor put me on 3 weeks of opti-fast diet. 3 gross shakes a day, nothing else!!! Now before you start to cry, as I did, let me tell you, It wasn't near as bad as I thought it would be. I had a harder time the week before I started it, worried, than I did once I was on it. That said... Day 1,2 and 3 are the worst, prepare for headaches. After that just keep remembering that it is only for a set amount of days only, and that it will make your surgery 100x easier for your doctor(it cleans away your liver) and your recovery! Trust me. Day 20 and 21 were a little harder cause you do get sick of it, but you have the excitment of getting your band soon to take your mind off of it. You'll do fine. You can PM me if you like. Good Luck!!

My doctor put me on a 2 week liquid diet today is my 3rd day. I am hungry but not as bad as I thought it would be. I just hope to stay strong and not break. I keep thinking about my surgery date the 27th and that seems to help. I have waited since last October to have this done.

I didnt find the LD as hard because this is what I did

When my date was set I made anappointment with my dietician and she told me to start a ld 2 weeks prior to surgery....this was 1 1/2 months before surgery...

I started to substitue 1 meal a day (breakfast) into the Carnation Instant Breakfast for 2 weeks

Then the next 2 weeks (1 month prior to surgery) I started to have the carnation for dinner (and breakfast) and I would have a decent size lunch...

2 weeks prior to surgery I went into my LD not feeling like I punished mysef because i weened into it.. I have my pre op the week before surgery and I was down 16 pounds and the doc was happy as ever.

I told him what I did and he now suggests this to his patient I knkow this because my husband will be banded on tuesday and he gave my husband written instructions 2 months before his date and my dh said to him looks familiar to me and he said your wife had the best idea so anyone who had a date 1-2 months out he suggests that.....

Makes me feel good

So now I am 2 months out and down 43 pounds after surgery

That's good advice. I am about 3 weeks away from starting LD, so I have cut my calories down to 1200 a day and mostly liquid except one or two healthy choice meals. I am hoping to prepare my body for it. So far I've lost 12 lb with just this mini-diet. Anyone who says this is the easy way out is highly mistaken!!!

I started my clear 7 days diet/fast yesterday.

The best advice I had was to take liquid tylenol & drink coffee or tea for the headaches, and drink jell-o juice ( the liquid jell-o right form the stove, it stays warm for over and hour and it fills you up...well, not as much as ribs and baked Beans (the food I am dreaming of!) but it does fill you up!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
