DUMPING Syndrome...it's not just for bypass patients

Recommended Posts

You should get your gallbladder checked out. If it is gallbladder, from my experience, it will eventually happen more and get more painful. I had mine removed so I know how it starts off and how it progresses. Wouldn't hurt to have a simple test to see if you have gallstones. Apparently, alot of people have problems with their gallbladders after this surgery. Mine was removed several years before surgery though.

Just my thoughts.

This happened to me a week ago after eating some (very rich) lobster bisque in a restaurant. It was very scary, and I didn't realize what was happening until I had been in the fetal position for a couple of hours and the nausea had passed. Now, I am mortified to eat out.

Hey All,

6 days ago I had the gastric sleeve surgery. Starting on day 2, I had sporadic diarrhea and fatigue. Then beginning yesterday afternoon and continuing into today, I have been having explosive diarrhea, along with feeling so very weak, I can't do anything but sleep.

I started researching the web a couple of hours ago, and found out about "dumping syndrome." It certainly sounds like me! However, everything talks about eating "too much" and sweets and fatty foods. Well, I am having the opposite issue.... I am not able eat much of anything. I'm even having trouble getting down enough fluids to keep from dehydration!

The common denominator in all I have eaten (hospital and home) is "chicken and beef broth." I've noticed that they always seem to be "salty". Does anyone know if dumping syndrome can be brought on by broth? If so, then what can I "eat" at this stage of my process?

Thanks a bunch!

Tina

Hi! First I want up commend you for using the search feature here :) it's refreshing to see!

At six days out our digestive systems are very messed up and trying to heal. Most of us have lots of diarrhea, explosive at times.

If it continues and you start getting dehydrated put a call into your doctor.

As for the salty broth I really don't think that's it, but lie sodium broth is the best so try that.

Good luck to you :)

These things are not dumping syndrome. Dumping does not mean diarrhea. Dumping is from undigested carbs getting too far down the intestine without being digested. It can cause diarrhea, nausea, chills, and other flu-like symptoms. But you wouldn't get it from lobster bisque or salty broth. You get dumping from sugary things like soft drinks, fruit juices, or candy. And sleevers usually don't dump. It is mostly a phenomenon that occurs in RNY or DS because the intestines are modified and the pyloric valve is gone.

Diarrhea can happen during the liquid and purée phases because you aren't eating solids so solids might not come out. It can also happen if you have too much Fiber, like having lettuce too early. Or if food just doesn't agree with you. Or if your gall bladder is acting up. I have a lot of experience (7 months) of diarrhea because of gall bladder issues. But it's NOT dumping syndrome. If you have it for months at a time like me, you should be working with your doctor.

I just wanted to clear that up because I see people mixing up diarrhea and dumping syndrome all the time here and they are not the same thing.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
