while the weight goes down!!!

kathy

Kathy I just made my way back to this thread due to a recent posting and saw your comments. I do have a free consultation with a PS for this Monday 8 AM :D. I have told my Doctors about the skin rashes and they gave me medicines for them but no pictures were taken. In fact the last time any good pictures were taken of my body with just underwear on was the day before surgery. I do have some pictures of me in my Halloween costume and Christmas ugly sweater. I never liked taking pictures and still don't. Do you know will the PS take any pictures during a consultation? If so, I better wear my pretty blue matching underwear. How nice to be able to say I have pretty underwear now.

I have this feeling that with 40 more pounds to lose before I reach my goal that the Dr may say I will still have to wait. Also afraid that the insurance will not pay for it. With all the excess skin on my breast, arms and legs I hope they will at least remove those and later when down to my goal my tummy. Will let you know what the Dr says.

Hi all,

I have been looking for some posts for people my age. I have even to seminar and waiting on my 1st appt phone call. My age has been my biggest drawback. Wish I had done this 15 yrs ago when it was offered to me. Now I have more health problems (mostly brought on by weight) I know that I have to do this. I think I'm just scared.

Hi Sissiegirl, it's pointless looking back. Have no regrets and just go for it. I was 67 when I had the procedure (last May) and haven't looked back since. Like you I do wish I'd taken the plunge years ago but it is what it is, I didn't, I have now and I have never felt better even though I'm still 14 kg short of my target. Friends and relatives can't believe the transformation in me. Yes it's been hard and still is some days. Those all you can eat buffets are a thing of the past and I tend to look at food portions with a new eye, I can't believe what some folks eat but I was that person. The thing that finally spurred me on was my GP warning me that I was a short step away from insulin to treat my type II diabetes. I'm still taking medication but very minimal. I hope to come off that at my next check up. Do let us know how it's going. Cath

I was in my sixties when I had it done. Not bad at all . lost over sixty lbs. But be very careful, now 4 years later I have gained it all back. It is only a tool and I didn't use it correctly and failed. I'm trying again, have to, my blood sugars are out of control. On insulin 3x a day.

I had mine in aug of this year, I am mindful the surgery itself was a life saver, it gave me a start to get on the right track, but surgery in of itself will not have long term success if you don't learn the lessons we all should have learned earlier, be aware you have 60 yrs of bad habits and you still have to be mindful each and everyday, esp when you are back to being able to eat most anything. I have to constantly think, remember how you got to this situation. should tattoo it to my forehead!!! I started at 333 and am now down to 240, I was at 294 at surgery, had cut carbs about 2 months before surgery and lost 25 lbs, realized I was insulin resistant, so it is a lifestyle change now as well. of all bp meds except htcz, for Water build up. I feel great can easily walk over a mile now, and loving it, down to size 20 pants and seeing size 18 soon. My life will be changing with twin grandboys in the near future that will keep me busy as well, Good Luck!!

I think I must be one of the older ones here I'm 67 but I feel like a kid since the surgery I had VSG in sept 2016 I was 218 now 169 and I'm so happy . I didn't have any complications just tired for a few weeks . I paid for it myself it cost me ten thousand pounds here in the UK and worth every penny . Like everyone else best decision ever just wish I had done it when I was younger . Good luck every one x

Hello everyone! Glad I found you all, my age. In Oklahoma, got sleeve a year ago this month, was 61. Was never over weight until my late 40's then packed it on. 230 at surgery. Now 136. Feeling great but am also nervous that I can maintain. I eat Protein, jog 4 miles a day, drink all my Water and take daily Vitamins. Everything has been good except I really lost hair. Anyone have that problem. It's starting to come back really wavy and more curly now. Which is fine... losing 93 lbs in a year compare to some hair loss... no problem. Love to hear from others on your journey. If you ask would I do it again at this age YOU BET! Wish I had done it 20 years ago. Almost Diabetic and heart problems is what got my attention. Great to hear about all your successes and concerns!

oneyearout, that is exactly how I gained weight, in my late 30's and early forties, quit smoking and all the bad habits came to roost, never had even entertained the idea of dieting before that. Was always able to bounce back to my weight after pregnancies. Until my last of 4 at 37, and as I said, I quit smoking. I had no clue , thought if I ate healthy, I could eat how ever much I wanted as long as it was whole wheat and Healthy, I guess not:P:blink:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
