I'm glad to see this post b/c I am 62 and meeting w/ Dr. Friday. I had a failed band once and want the sleeve due to comorbidities. I was told that I would be OK, so I'll pass this info on to you. I'm a light weight and my Dr. said to lose 60 lbs. We can do this. Message me. Thanks!

I'll be 64 in February. I was sleeved on 1/11/2016..I'm doing well and I'm so glad I made this decision and was approved. .this won't be an easy journey for me, I have quite a bit of weight to lose ,but knowing that I'm not alone is such a blessing.

I can't think of anything that would be different for an older person.

Your mother is fortunate to have you as part of her support system.

66 years old vs 45 years??

whatever "younguns" can do, seniors can do better!! :D

i don't think there is anything different that she needs to do before WLS

she should read the boards

any books that you possibly bought pre-op

KNOWLEDGE is POWER

she has watched your success

you lost almost 100 lbs and still counting!!!

congrats

proudgrammy - i didn't mean ANY disrespect the over 60 crowd...none at all! I'm just trying to make my mom's surgery as painless as possible :)

I'm sure you are right.....her journey will probably be much like mine. She's been reading the books, but she really doesn't like using the computer for anything other than playing games. She's not that into technology.

silly head - you were fine

i'm the silly jokester

maybe you could show mom how easy it is to use MFP

she could watch you, you could help her

hopefully she can realize the benefits of tracking

(she could always write on a pad of paper

keep a running daily tab

(my 85 year old mom refuses to learn the computer or kindle!!)

your help and support

what more could one ask for ;)

take care

good luck for mom's surgery

wishing her a speedy recovery

I'm around quite a bit. I like the lounge and powder room, the new venus and mars group. Right I am really battling the gain from the holidays. I'm glad the sleeve allows me to eat practically nothing because I'm not hungry.

I'm doing the 5:2 diet again where you only eat 500 calories 2x per week.

I did notice you're using many less emoticons! :)

@@notime

I'm 65 this year and it's one years since WLS for sleeve 1/15. (Also lapband 9 yrs ago. (Failed!))

My experience is that over 60 yrs we heal a bit slower. It may take more time to get around so patience is important.

My suggestion to anyone doing WLS is that each person is different. Days to recoup, days to eat mushy food, or move to solid etc if very individual. I started the solid food weeks after many others. It was just the way my tiny tummy preferred.

The weight loss pace is also individual.

Be kind to ourselves and accept we have had major surgery and if it's going to work, we have to do as the Doc says and not play around with food which is what got us where we are pre-surgery.

That and take advantage of the initial "no hunger" phase as the hunger does return at some point.

Best of WLS to your Mom!

Had sleeve surgery 18 months ago at age 68.

I've lost 100 pounds and have been maintaining at or below goal for the last 9 months.

I now weigh 135 pounds and eat 1800 calories a day. :)

Feel better than I have in many decades. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
