mmcclure 3 Posted November 3, 2010 My daughter and I are having VSG on November 12th. I originally told my boss that I would be back on November 29th, which would give me 2 weeks to recuperate. Now I'm wondering if I was being a bit hasty. I am 55 years old, have diabetes, high blood pressure and MS. The diabetes and MS already make me tired and I've been getting the idea from people that this surgery takes a lot of your energy out of you. Do you think I should plan on taking some extra time off to get on my feet? I have the time (and short-term disability), so that isn't a problem. But, I am sure my boss would be happier if I came back to work. Oh, and BTW, I have an office position - sit at a desk all day - but it is a long way to the bathroom (I keep hearing about liquids in, liquids out)! Thanks! Marilee Having an office position is definitely to your advantage. I had surgery on a Wednesday across the country and was back to work on Tuesday teaching middle school and coaching softball. I was lethargic but fine. I would normally say that two weeks is plenty of time to be off for VSG but only you know your body and your MS could factor into your recovery time. (I don't really know???) If you know your boss will take it easy on you and you will be sitting all day anyway, I think you'll be fine

Marilee I had my surgery on tuesday flew home on Saturday and went back to work on the following Thursday, but could have gone back sooner. sleeve 4 me 910 Posted November 4, 2010 I took 4 weeks off and I'm so glad I did. I didn't feel ok until day 14. I had terrible gas pain and it was super difficult to drink or eat anything. I was weak and could barely shower and get dressed. I could nap or lay down to rest at any time.
MRSKOUBiK 27 Posted November 4, 2010 Congratulations on your surgery date. It's very neat that you and your daughter are doing it together. Good luck to you both!

Marilee I took two weeks off on advice of my support group and Doc, and I was really glad did. It's not just the recovery, but also learning the schedule for drinking and eating. I didn't feel up to working until day 12. My first day back - i was done by 2:00p.m., but it progressively better.
