I am from Zachary but had my VSG on April 11 in Baton Rouge at Oschner. My birthday present to me. Insurance required for a six month wait and all sorts of test but they finally approved. So glad I did it. My husband adimately discouraged me from having the surgery but told me it was my dicission and he would support it. He has been great since. He has even lost a few pounds and been able to cut back on his diabetic meds. I went to my dietician yesterday and she said I was doing great. Feels good to have someone confirm your success. Haven't been back to surgical dr. Have appointment May 29. Hope he is happy with my progress. Starting weight 278, surgery weight 265 and today 242. Glad I found this whole forum. It has answered a lot of questions for me.

My husband is discouraging too. I will have mine in August. He won't come with me. He says it's not gonna work...and I'm gonna mess up my body and be in pain the rest of my life...but he refuses to educate himself. If anyone needs to not have complications, it's me...cause I'm married to Debbie downer!!

We pray you don't have any complications. He is probably jealous. I have had several people tell me that their spouse was against their surgeries at first because they were afraid they would be left (divorced) once all the weight was gone. He probably just needs reassurance from you that you love him. See if you can talk to him about that. After months of my hubby grumbling, I told him i respected his feelings but this was something I was doing for me and my health. And that I loved him no matter what my size. Maybe you should start, if not already doing it, a date night. Go play mini golf, go to an arcade, do something fun. And continue your date nights after you recover from ur surgery. But mainly, reassure him of your love. I'll be praying for you! Where will you be having your surgery? Let us know when.

I'm a self pay. My surgery is with Dr. Kelly in Tijuana. So he thinks I'm gonna get killed there! It's August 23rd. Wish it was sooner, but I have to wait til the sow season at work. I work at an oral surgeons office in Metairie and summertime is busy season for wisdom teeth. My hubs and I have a stressed relationship anyway. We love each other. Hes my best friend. But he's a tight wad and I say, ya gotta live, too. So don't really know how much of his opinion is about money. I have just the amount I need in my 401 k so I'm using that. He won't help financially in any way. So...like I said...I think a lot of his negativity is because I'm spending money.

Hi guys! I'm not from Louisiana' date=' but I am a neighbor! (Mississippi)

I was wondering if anyone had any info on Dr. Thomas Borland in New Iberia? I've been looking into driving down to Mexico to get the surgery done (my husband and I are terrified of flying) but then I found that for only 1000 more, I could have it done only 4 hours away rather than 13 hours away. I see that he is the Chief of Surgery at the hospital, so that is very comforting too, but I also see that he does the surgery as outpatient and then has you stay in a local hotel so he can make "house calls" to you. Is that safe? I haven't read of any doctors not making you stay 2 days in a hospital, much less only a few hours. Anyway, thanks for info you can give me![/quote']

I was sleeved on May 15 by Dr Borland. I liked not having to stay in a hospital and he came to my hotel room to check on me twice. Also his staff and the staff at the surgery center were Great! I would defiantly recommend him!

Also it is a 4 hour minimal recovery time at the surgery center. They only send you home when you are perfectly ready.

Hi all,

I live in Baton Rouge. I am getting everythinng together to start my process. I have narrowed down my surgeon and hospital. I will be going to Dr. G in Lafayette at Lafayette General. Hoping to start my 3 months around the middle of June. That way I can try to get my surgery in September. I want to have it done before my birthday in October. Hopefully.

Thanks for the Louisiana thread.

I'm just curious as to why you chose Lafayette?

Fyi don't lose too much. You don't want to drop under your bmi. I almost did. Scared me to death. I tealized it two days before my final appt. I ran to the computer and did it. I was 37. I ate well the next two days. It would have been be my luck to be under and they cancel my surgery. Good luck

It really came down to my insurance. i have Aetna. I was looking at BR General but it's out of network for my insurance. Then I had decided on Women's but my insurance only pays a max of 15k. Their cost is over 15k for the surgery. they I would had to pay for rverything over that. I was told, I might had a max out of pocket of 10k.

That changed my mind. I got on here and satrted looking at different posts about which hospitals and doctors were being used. I did some research and liked Dr. G. Also, Lafayette General is $11500 for the surgey

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
