Stomach Burnning

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I was sleeved the end of July and have lost about 30 pounds. I look good (or so I am told) and feel good.... UNTIL I eat-- then I am sick as a dog. I get a burning in my stomach that tends to last a few hours. Since this discomfort began about 2 months post op, and occurs after most meals, I discussed the possibility of an ulcer with my surgeon. He quickly dismissed the idea and told me that it is due to too many textures that I am eating. WHAT???? I followed his post-op diet to the letter and i find his latest diagnosis hard to swallow.

Anyone have the same problem?????????????

Are you on an acid reducer like Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid, or Protonix? It sounds like reflux, and if you aren't taking anything, I would recommend talking to your surgeon. Pepcid, Zantac, tums, rolaids will only treat the symptoms and not prevent the acid overproduction.

Thank you for your replies. When I left the hospital, i was given several 'scripts', one of them being for prilosec. Since prilosec was not available, the pharmacist suggested omeprazole and said it was the generic. I checked with the surgeon's nurse and she said it was ok to take it instead of the prilosec. I took her recommended dose of one 20 mg pills twice aday. I have been faithful with the medication but I still get the burning. At one of my post-op followups, the nurse wrote a script for an Upper Gi and said he would probably do an endoscopy to check the stomach. When he came into the room, he didn't even discuss those options....he just said the burning was due to too many textures for my stomach to handle. Could he be right??

Are you taking the Prilosec (omeprazole) on an empty stomach, and waiting at least 1 hour before eating? You might need something different than the Prilosec, I take the generic form without issues.

He could be right since he's the doctor. I didn't have issues with food textures that you are describing at all.

I was also sleeved in July and have only had "stomach burning" when I tried to stop taking PPI's. When you start the PPI's, it will take a few days to see results. I have been wanting to get off them due to the side effects. I am now taking one every other day and seem to be doing ok. When I run out, I may try zantac or galviscon and take when needed. I have read on here that some people have trouble getting off PPI's.

I had the same issue and switched to prevacid. I take 30mg daily and it seems to control the heartburn much better than the Prilosec I took for the 1st 6 weeks. Sometimes different PPI's work for different folks. Prilosec may not be the best one for you or it may not be a high enough dose. This sensation is very common with this surgery. Good luck!!

Thank you again for your replies and suggestions. Unfortunatlely I just purchased a 28 day supply of omeprazole but definitely will try another medication when I run out.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
