Which Scales Do I Believe?

Recommended Posts

So frustrated! After being on this pre-surgery diet of 1400 calories a day for one week, I only lost .2 lbs according to the scales at the doctors office. Today I bought a set of bariatric scales that look like a doctors office scale but are digital. According to those I lost 6.3 lbs. Which scales do I believe? rrrggghhhh

Unfortunately I have to go by my Doctor's scale. What I do is weigh at the doctor and then weigh as soon as I get home so I can see how my scale differs. Then I adjust my weight loss accordingly. I still have to lose two pounds for my pre-op, but then again I will most likely need to lose around 5 as a precaution to weigh in under my goal weight at the doctor. I weigh at home first thing in the morning and naked. At the doctor it is usually the afternoon and of course I am not naked. I found that my weight fluctuates about 3 pounds from morning to afternoon and without clothes to with clothes. Though I am suprised that your scales are so off. I got a weight watchers scale from target for 30 bucks. Works like a charm.

Believe the doctor's scale; they're usually right.

Doc scale would be more accurate. Make sure your scale is on level ground and not carpet (they can both give off results).

Gayle I think eveyone would love to have your WII fit scale :-)

Even post-op, I share this frustration. I went in on Monday to see my NUT and she weighed me. I weighed in at 7 lbs more than I had when I weighed myself on Friday at home. 7 POUNDS!!! That is a huge difference. I mentioned it to her and all she had to say was that the scale at the office "weighs heavy" and plus, it was the middle of the day. I can see that making a 3 lbs difference. But 7? Sheesh.

I try to always wear the same for consecutive weigh ins - who cares if the doctor thinks I only have one outfit :-)

Just think of the clothes you were wearing on those days. If you were wearing shoes, they can be 2 pounds (for fall winter), a pair of newer jeans vs. older dress pants can probably be another pound, each cup of liquid you had is another 0.5 pounds. Fleur, something to consider - I for example weigh in heavy on Mondays because I often eat less healthy over the weekend and retain Water due to excess salt consumption (I can lose 4 pounds from Monday to Tuesday, LOL).

I also weigh heavy during TOM and also during ovu.

Do you have to weigh in again? If this was just a fluke of the day, you may get a nice surprise with an AWESOME loss. If this is a question of surgery or not - weigh your clothes and chose the lightest - I am not kidding!

Otherwise - good luck! Oh, and lucky you - my pre-op diet is 800-900 calories!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
