Vitamins and VSG Pregnancy

Recommended Posts

Women who are getting ready to try to conceive begin taking prenatals (or at least they should a few months in advance), right?

So my question is: should I just add a prenatal to my regular Vitamin routine *now* to prepare for in a few months when we are TTC? Or should I just double my multi?

Is it possible to have TOO much folic acid? My multi already has 400mcg and the prenatals have 800mcg....and this is the same for other Vitamins that are found in both. Should I be concerned with over-doing it with any of the vitamins?

For those of you are have already gone through pregnancy as a post-op, how did your vitamin regimen change and for those of you preparing to conceive, what changes are you already making?

We hope to start next year and I'd like to get into a routine now (and I always like to be prepared for the unexpected).

Thanks!

Well, I am pregnant now, and I was already taking prenatals, not because we were trying to get pregnant...We WEREN'T!! but because they had higher amounts of the Vitamins I needed post surgery. I didn't have to take them as often throughout the day. It isn't going to hurt you, just compare to make sure you are still getting all the Vitamins you need (post surgery).

I had my surgery in June and I'm 10 wks preggo now. Oops..but my dr said everything should be fine, just trying to make sure I eat. I hope you get pg when you want. I hope it goes smoothly for you.

Also, congrats!!! If you are planning for pg, then you must be close to your goal weight! WooHoo! Celebrate!

I was told that some of the Vitamins and minerals should not be taken in excess because yes, you can take too much. I'm currently just taking 1.5 times my multi, and an Omega 3 with DHA and EPA. When/if I get pregnant, I will switch over to prenatals, but I hate how those things taste, and right now I love my multi that I've been taking for over 2 years. So, until we get a BFP result, then I'm sticking to my multi and my Omega 3s. Oh, and I take the sublingual B12.< /p>

Thank you for the replies. I added the prenatal to my regular routine a couple of weeks ago (around the time of the original post) and must have stared at the amounts of Vitamins and minerals forever to decide on everything.

So Tiffy, you plan to *only* take the prenatal when you are pregnant--and that is enough for us? I guess it seemed like some of the Vitamins were lacking in it compared with my multi.

I plan to get into my PCP soon and run some more labs (and continue to do more independent research) on the Vitamin stuff to make sure I'm not getting too much with the brands I have chosen.

Thank you both SO much for replying! We're actually hoping for the BFP this month and if not have to wait a few months to TTC due to timing for jobs.

my sleeve doctor told me just to add some extra folic acid. I already have 800 in my multi, but she said to add a bit more witha separate supplement

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
