coops 1,790 Posted October 27, 2010 Ok, I really need some advise here... My surgeon has never mentioned Protein Bars and drinks... he did say to eat Protein first and ensure that my diet is rich in protein, which is mostly is (by that I mean over the last two weeks, when I have been really poorly I have waivered a little but otherwise it is protein first all the way). Now, although my weight loss is ok, it seems to be a lot slower that others and there are regular periods of my weight staying the same... so... my question is; do I invest in some Protein Drinks and include them in my daily calorie intake, or should I just keep plodding along? Oh by the way, I am in the UK so if anyone can recommend a Protein Drink that I can buy here... if you think it would be worth me trying them out??? Cheers Coops x
Jordien 30 Posted October 28, 2010 I say write down what you are eating and measure your Protein intake. Is it around 60 grams? If not, maybe supplement with a shake or something. My nutritionist does not really recommend Protein Bars. She does recommend supplementing with a shake or putting the whey powder (unflavored) in other foods, just so we meet our quota of 60 grams (60 to 80g is our recommendation.) So maybe track the food you're eating and see where you are? I order from www.unury.com and have success using it. The chocolate is good (1 scoop and 1 cup of milk is 28g of protein) and I also use the unflavored to mix into things. Good luck!
coops 1,790 Posted October 28, 2010 Hey Jordien, thanks for your help! Yea, I use myfatsecret to monitor what I eat and my Protein is normally 60g or above... I was just wondering if using Protein shakes and bars as a Meal Replacement would speed up my weight loss and perhaps stop these stalls that I get... I dunno... suppose I am just feeling a little down!! I have given up the smokes too and I am soooo worried that this will affect my weight loss, last week I stayed the same and this week - mid week weigh in and therefore unofficial - I have gained 2lb... this is the first time I have gained and I am really worried!!!!! Tiffykins 673 Posted October 28, 2010 Protein bars typically have a lot of carbs as well which in my opinion isn't worth it. You can find a few out there, but if the Protein count wasn't 3-5 times that of the carb count, I thought it was wasted space in my sleeve that I could eat some meat. My surgeon is not an advocate of using protein drinks/supplements/bars at all. Of course, during the liquid post-op period it's needed, but once we get to food, he wants all protein to be from food sources. Don't fret, increase your Fluid intake, change things up, increase your activity, and things will shift. Even in maintenance, I bounce up and down 2-4lbs every couple of days. It's Water weight, and it will go away.
coops 1,790 Posted October 28, 2010 Cheers Tiff... yea, that makes sense. I have increased my Water today, and will continue to do so as I have slacked off a little lately, but I haven't been well so I suppose I need to get focused and stop moaning...lol
