Pregnant During VSG surgery/??

Recommended Posts

I am now 6 weeks post op. On Friday I was feeling extremely weak, nauseous, and I couldn't stop vomiting. When I arrived to the ER the immediately determined that I was dehydrated. They hooked me up to IV and tested my urine. After testing my urine the nurse returned and informed me that my pregnancy test was positive. About an hour later I was sent in for a sonogram. The tech that conducted the sonogram stated that I was 7 weeks and 5 days pregnant!!!! She said that I had became pregnant possibly 2-3 days before the surgery was performed. I remained in the hospital until Sunday for further observation so the surgeon could determine if the illness was from the surgery or the pregnancy. When I was discharged on Sunday the surgeon said that the illness was definitely from the pregnancy. I'm still wondering how did this happen....

Wow, that is interesting. I was wondering about this very thing myself the other day since DH and I aren't using any formal BC methods and I'm getting my requirements together for surgery. Either way, congratulations on the baby and the surgery. Sounds like you have a pretty stubborn little bean in there to make it through the surgery. Sounds like a blessing in disguise to me. Congrats!

Oh my! That is one crazy story. I would think your doctor is going to write an article for a medical journal about you and your little baby. Can't wait to hear how things go over the next in a little over 7 months from now (and see a picture). Good Luck to your family. By the way is this your first?fv

Thanks!! This will be my second. I felt that this is a story that needed to be told. Just something for us VSG women to be mindful of prior to surgery. Especially since all birth control must be stopped 4 weeks prior to surgery.

I know a lot of women that have had surgery (some type not VSG) during pregnancy, even early on before a test could pick it up and they all delivered healthy, thriving babies.. For us, getting out of ketosis is essential so eat carbs, get in your Vitamins and fluids. Ketosis can cause fetal brain damage, and you just aren't going to be able to worry about weight loss right now. The baby will take what it needs from your body so you need to feed your body so it can sustain itself during the pregnancy. Best wishes, and congratulations ! ! !

Wow wow wow. That is a lot to take in. I think you need extra love and pampering. Lotsa extra rest and frequent small meals. I would drink a couple glasses whole milk daily too just to be sure. Baby first, but the lil sleeve will need to filled often.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
