Drain OUT, but now worried!

So I finally got that annoying as he!! drain tube pulled out of me today. My surgeon didn't stitch the hole, or glue it or even butterfly band-aid it. He said it would heal on it's own.

REALLY???? I know he is a great surgeon that I trust, but it is hard to believe when I have a large oval gaping hole in my abdomen and blood is coming out. AARGH!

Anyone else told that a hole from their drain would just heal up?

Hi there!

It will close on its own. Just put gauze on top of it and secure it with tape. I did it for about 4 days and then it stopped leaking. Just change it each time you shower. =)

Dr. Aceves just put a large gauze over it with medical tape and said it would close up from the inside out. He said I should change the gauze daily and it would be ok like that.

He was right.

Thanks ladies!

I talked to my NUT today and told her what happened and she gave me more thorough instructions, etc. She said when I'm home to let it air out, and just keep it covered if I'm out and about. She said the same as you all, it WILL heal normally. Phew.

She also told me what to look for if indeed there was a problem (red hot to the touch, or a boil under the skin) that I should definitely come back and have it checked. But otherwise, keep on taking care of it and it would heal nicely.

Yep, same thing. I asked about it, and he said... can't stitch it, just have to leave it! I was like okay that's weird! haha... He said to just keep a sterile pad or gauze over it and I'd be down to a bandaid by the weekend. I think it's normal that you freaked out over it, don't worry! Hope it heals up quickly for you! I can't over how quickly my incisions and the drain hole healed! My stomach looks amazing, compared to 5 weeks ago!!

I love these questions. It makes feel more prepared for surgery. I didn't even know about the drain until I saw it in a post. I have learned so much from this site.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
