I'm new! Ready for a new life

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. I just got a call from the Dr's office yesterday that my insurance has approved the surgery. Of course, I have to jump thru hoops. I have to see a psychologist and I have to go to a dietician and my doctor for 3 months and also have to join a gym for three months and start a diet before the surgery. After three months of supervised weight loss then I can have the surgery. I'm really scared.. I'm really nervous.... But, I know , after reading so much on here, that I will be healthy and that's what I want. To be healthy and be able to play with my grandchildren. That's it. I'm not sure how I will handle this. I know I have to be on a clear liquid diet after the surgery and that scares me too. It's not so much before the surgery that scares me. It's if I can do it after the surgery. food has always provided comfort to me. When I was happy, I'd eat. When I was sad, I'd eat. I'd eat, to replace everything else in my life. Will that go away??

Welcome to VST blueeyes! :)

Take a look around, you will find so much information here. If not, start up a new topic - everyone's always willing to chime in with support.

I totally understand the "wanting to live again" thing. So far and every passing week that is becoming more a reality for me! I'm so thankful for my sleeve, I almost find it too good to be true. Though it IS true!!!

Pretty much right after surgery you will be on the liquids for about 2-3 weeks. I didn't find this to be too much trouble really, because to be honest I didn't even have any kind of real appetite anyway. It was very different feeling, one that I've never really known before. That was my first taste of TRUE freedom from the beast of gluttony!! However I still get my spells of having cravings. That's all a part of being a woman, but again - those cravings are pretty much squashed after a few tastes of whatever I'm craving. I also don't crave them on my other times. I just eat to live now... not live to eat. I've never really understood that statement until my Sleeve. That's a huge deal, especially knowing that I used to have a Lap Band.

My food relationship has TOTALLY changed :( ...but I know its all for the good. I don't enjoy/love food like I used to, but its totally worth it.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
