Support Groups

Recommended Posts

The Kane Center I am going through requires one pre and one post op support group meeting. I have been to the pre support and I must admit I learned alot, but the one thing I noticed was that there seemed to be a lot of folks there who have had their surgeries and and well seemed to be "hooked" on support groups.

I don't want food and my impending weight loss to be an obsession, just for it to become the norm.

How many here go to support groups, or did? Do you prefer to get your support other places?

I am all for learning, just not obsessing.

I went to support groups once a month for the first 6 months. I found them helpful in regards to staying on track and voicing any concerns/questions I had about "what is normal".

Plus, our leader always brought samples of food that were WLS friendly. Never sold the products, just offered suggestions for people having a hard time finding Protein shakes they liked or "convenience" foods.

I do understand the concern about obessessing ... But, I use this board for that! LOL

I've only gone to one. There were only two other WLS patients there, one spouse, one grandchild, one prospective patient. It was not very well led or organized, the gal who led it was waaaaaay spacy, and it was just boring. Plus the office is 45 minutes away (speeding), the meetings are at 6:00 on my days off... just got better things to do. I hang around here and OH to keep my head in the game. :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
