Nexium/Pepcid AC chewable, same thing?

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on 10/15, loving my sleeve so far. I started full liquids today and seem to be ok with everything. Lots of burping going on here. I have a question though, Dr Aceves gave me the Nexium-mups, but when i take them i get sick, like dizzy, faint, fast heart beat sick. So I went to the store and they had Pepcis AC chewables and so far they are not making me sick. i emailed with Gaby, and she said NO! When i googled them, they are both PPI, so i'm not sure why i cannot take them.

Any advice???

thanks,

patti

Are you taking Nexium on an empty stomach? Sometimes it does not work well with certain people, I received the IV Nexium in the hospital and now I am taking the generic dissolvable prevacid. Both medications do the same thing except Nexium is prescription only and cost more $$$$. Pepcid is a Histamine 2 blocker which reduces acid production in the stomach. Nexium is a proton pump inhibitor and it also reduces acid production. Just notify your physician and let him know you used another medication for acid reflux. Are you taking any other medications? Some medications may interact with the pepcid, so again, notify your physician and let him know you are taking the over-the-counter Pepcid.

I asked my dr. about acid reducers and he said he like to just wait and see how his patients respond. So far the only time I have felt any heartburn was when I took pain meds. Since I didn't like the feeling of heartburn, I switched to rapid release tylenol today and that seems to be helping with the soreness & no more heartburn.

Pepcid is an h2blocker http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0000872 and does not work the same as a PPI.

Nexium, Prilosec, Protonix, Prevacid are true PPIs. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001062

Pepcid will treat the symptoms, but not prevent the overproduction of acid like PPIs work.

Prilosec and Nexium are both labeled to be taken on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before eating.

If the Nexium isn't working for you, Prilosec and Prevacid are both available OTC.
