juliegeraci 7 Posted June 17, 2006 Hi Dr. C, I have a question for you. I have acid reflux and one of the bandsters told me aloe vera juice and prilosec work well. Is it okay to take zantac or pepcid ac? I took a pepcid ac last night and I feel so much better today. I think it is because I may be drinking my liquids too fast. I am 11 days post op. My doctor is doing a swallow test on Monday to make sure things are passing through okay. I have no PB just a golfball feeling and it runs into my esophogus so I thought it was acid reflux or swelling. How long does swelling take to go away. I am on liquids only still. Trace Curry 1 Posted June 17, 2006 Julie, In bandsters who have reflux right after surgery it usually is due to swelling like you said, which goes away within a couple weeks. You're just like anyone else when it comes to antireflux meds - take whatever works for you. Make sure you follow up with your surgeon to get it checked out though. Good luck, Dr. C Cincinnati, Ohio 877.442.BAND
Dody 0 Posted June 17, 2006 I have been at this for about 3 years. I've done about 400 lap RNY's and about 300 lap bands. Dr. C Just a quick question. What is "lap RNY"?
juliegeraci 7 Posted June 17, 2006 Thank you Dr. C for answering my question. I feel better today after taking Zantac and slowing down on my liquid consumption.
Trace Curry 1 Posted June 17, 2006 Lap RNY is a laparoscopic gastric bypass. Dr. C
Dody 0 Posted June 18, 2006 thanks for clearing that up. I thought that was the only way they did RNY anymore was laparoscopically. Glad to have you as part of the forum.

melmcc99 0 Posted June 20, 2006 Dr. C, I am not banded yet and am nervous. How many major problems with bands have you seen? I'm not talking about the normal stuff like, something stuck or pb's or reflux and all, I mean slippage and erosion problems or anything else that might cause a crisis. I know I need to do this for my health and part of me just wants to get it over with and the other part of me is scared too. I'm not affraid of working at the band itself, but obviously I'm doing it to get well and stay well, not add additional problems to it. I also know that no one can predict who will have a problem either. I am just curious about your experience to what you've seen in the long run with the band procedures you've done. Sorry, that was a bit wordy, but I'm sure you understand what I mean. Thanks
Trace Curry 1 Posted June 20, 2006 I have had a couple of slips, and no erosions (knock on wood), so I guess the answer is that major problems are pretty rare in my experience. I think it's normal to be apprehensive and worry about complications or whether the band will really work. Everybody goes through this, just try to focus on the long-term benefits!
