OMG . . . surgery tomorrow! Moved up!! Yikes!!

Recommended Posts

Okay, so my original surgery date was next Monday, Nov 1st. But Friday I got a call from my surgeon's office letting me know that someone canceled and could I come in Tuesday Oct 26 (tomorrow!). I said yes! But now I'm like in shock. I only had to do a 2 day liquid diet and thought that would be difficult but I'm not even hungry. My nerves are so on edge . . . food (for the first time in a LONG) time is the least of my concerns.

Just wanted to vent a little I guess and ask for any helpful hints and/or things I should bring/take or have at home before besides the usual things I know to have.

So SCARED!! Please for those that have had it, the pain on a scale of 1 to 10?? What is it? Be BRUTALLY honest. I've had a c-section and had discomfort with that and of course contractions while going in labor, and I did NOT do well with that pain.

Thanks! Pray for me! lol

MissP, wow!!!! Congrats - you didn't even have time to really think about how close you were... that may actually turn out to be a good thing. The jitters usually set in a week before, so you will skip all that. Such a blessing!

Bring with you some comfy PJ's, undies etc... you won't want anything rubbing too much against your incisions and maybe some warm comfy socks too.

IMO the pain is not even hardly that bad. I had a worse time with the nausea really. I'd say the pain is maybe a 3 or 4 at the most.

Wishing you a quick and speedy recovery!!! Check in when you can. :)

Oh wow, that is scary moving the date up! Sort of takes you off-guard doesn't it? You are most likely in recovery now. I hope you are doing well.

As for pain, the nurses kept asking me to rate my pain, 1 being hardly at all, and 10 being the worst. I never got higher than a 4. Truly. And now 4 days post-op I can truly say I haven't had pain meds since Sun. night, Tylenol, quick release only, and I wouldn't even say I'm in PAIN. I am more just SORE. Like my tummy is sore when I roll over in bed at night or go to pick something up. But not pain, just sore. Each day that passes I feel better.

Hoping everything went well for you!

Honestly the pain is managable... I was on a morphine drip/pump thing for two days and had the ability to push the button (at certain times) to self medicate. This was really nice... :) The first two days were not too bad, the third day was the roughest for me. If you have a chance stay in the hospital two nights, it is helpful when you feel awful to have someone who will bring you pain medicine. Listen to the doctor and do your breathing exercises. It is counter-intuitive to breathe into a pain in your side but if you do it alleviates the gas pains. Also get up and walk... I know you will not want to and would rather lay there but make yourself get up. :) The first week was the roughest for me but it gets better each day. Just keep plugging along and pretty soon you will be rocking your sleeve. :)

By the time you read this...congratulations. I am sure you did great. Can't wait to read about your experiences. I am scheduled for 6 December. Also a bit afraid of the pain. Never had surgery before and I have only been put under for a short time. Let me know how the pain was.

Ok I am 2 days post op and man this was really an experience I'll never forget. Thanks everyone for the feedback. I too didn't experience so much "pain" but mostly soreness. Fir me the hardest thing to deal with is the gas AMD nausea. Man I threw up so much and worried about leaks. Everyte I sat up I felt sick to my stomach. But the medicine they switched me too has helped tremendously.

Yesterday day 1 post op I felt so much better. Today however my "monthly visitor" decided to come a WEEK early and so Im dealing with cramps along with the soreness. Not fun. Lol but not unbearable. They wanted to release me today but I haven't taken in enough liquids. Just feels wierd.

For those that have been sleeved already how long before you feel "normal" and can eat or drink without feeling sick??

Thanks for the positive words. I needed it. :-)

OMGOSH Girlie! Congrats on your surgery :)...you sound pretty good. I couldn't even think about posting 2 days out. I didn't have any throwing up, but the gas was TERRIBLE and of course I didn't want to drink anything. I started to feel "normal" again on day 14. Then had some downs again after that, then at week 6 (when I could eat anything) felt "normal" again. So did Dr. Zane say why you were throwing up so much??? Hope you're feeling better soon...hugs!

Thanks! :)

I think the nausea was just overwhelming. Everytime I sat up I couldn't help it.

14 days til feeling normal? Seems like a long time. How do you drink your Water? I can't take mire than 3 sips without feeling wierd. Indigestion etc.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
