Hi to all fellow UK sleevers

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, just want to introduce myself. I'm Angela and I'm due to have my VSG surgery Dec 7th.

I'm having the op on the NHS at my local hospital.

At the moment I am not feeling nervous about the procedure, but this might not last ! LOL !!!

I'd be really interested to hear from any of you with your post op experiences and with any advice you can pass on. The stories I have read on the site since I joined have been really encouraging and helpful. Its good to hear it from the people who are living it.

I'm starting a milk based pre op diet around Nov 17th, yum yum !!! I'm really looking forward to that LOL !!!

No more appointments now before the op, I'm just sitting back, getting as prepared as possible and waiting for the day. Only 44 days to go, not that I'm counting LOL !!!!

Looking forward to hearing from you

Best wishes Angela.

Hi Angela,

I had my VSG done in Sheffield just over 15 months ago and I had to do a milk and yoghurt diet for 10 days prior to the op. It was horrible but you do get used to it. I hate yoghurt so I didn't have many but I did have the odd oxo drink every now and then. The easiest way for me to cope with it was to let the family cook their own meals where possible and go into a different room whilst they were eating. I didn't have any problems with my op. It was a revision from a band though so was slightly different but all went well and I was out after 4 days.

Where are you having your op?

Hi Helen,

I'm having my op done in my local hospital in Dewsbury on the NHS. I come under Mid Yorkshire PCT incorporating Huddersfield, Wakefield & Pontefract areas. Anyone having the op done has to come to Dewsbury for referral and all their appointments and to have the surgery.

My surgeon is Mr Clive White who also does the procedure privately at the Spire hospital in Elland. He has years of experience. He has been an upper GI cancer speciallist for years and performed partial and full gastrectomies on cancer patients before the VSG came in for weight loss. He is really nice and I have every confidence in him.

I can have some fruit and veg on the pre op diet, woo hoo ! I'll have to get a bit creative with that won't I ?

I asked Mr White if it would be a complete disaster if I had the odd bit of fish or chicken if I get desperate, he said he has no problem with that. I think he would prefer that rather than me going completely off the wagon and guzzling buckets of rubbish LOL !!!

I live on my own, so I'm getting as organised as I can. All my friends are lining up to help and I have a direct line to my GP surgery, for any post op issues, as I work for them !

I think the main issue I have at first is working out how to feed my cats without busting a gut LOL !!!! I've been trying to train them to jump up to be fed, but they're not having any of that so far !

Thanks for replying and for the advice, look forward to joining you on the loosers bench.

Best wishes Angela x

Your surgeon sounds very similar to mine. He too is an upper GI specialist plus he operated on my abdominal hernia a couple of times as well. I had every confidence in him as you have in yours. Let's face it, they're doing enough of these ops now to have the experience! You sound very well prepared and I am sure you will be absolutely fine when you get home. You will be able to log onto here and ask everybody for advice - I did that and it was a huge support. I sort of knew what to expect in some ways as I had had a band before this but if you've never had an op before you may be a bit nervous prior to your op and need some questions answering afterwards, but don't worry, you won't regret it, your life will change and you will feel great! xxx

Welcome on board Yorkshire Girl, you won't regret your journey at all! I had my op nearly 3 months ago here in Newcastle upon Tyne, had to self pay though, because I was last in priority list for the NHS so would have to wait for about 18 months. My surgeon, Mr Small (who also does the bariatrics for NHS Sunderland) was fantastic, as was the rest of his team. I too did the milk based diet, which was fine cause I love yogurth. My Dr said the same, a bit of fish or chicken would be fine if I was desperate, but in the end I stuck to the diet, was a bit hungry but I was so focused that it was fine. My consultant told me that my liver was "beautiful" that he had never seen a healthier and lovielr liver, so it was worth the hard work. I'm halfway to my target weight and very very happy. I wont recommend you to go on myfatsecret.com to track your calories, it's really helpful, the best of luck to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
