Newbie Pre-WLS question - Recovery Time

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Just found this site today and I have a pretty important question.... I'm only planning on taking two weeks off work after surgery. Is this enough?? I know everyone is different but I'm wondering how long it took all of you.

I just had laproscopic surgery in August to remove a large fibroid and recovery was fairly quick. I could have been back to work after two weeks. But this surgery is different and I have a feeling I'll be struggling with the liquid diet.

I'm considering a December surgery with Dr. Aceves but I'm still not 100% decided. I would love to hear your thoughts on this as well:

My inusurance will over the band or bypass 100% but I don't feel comfortable with either of those. The sleeve seems drastic but it feels right to me. I could have one of the first two surgeries in US but I'm considering going to MX and having to self pay. Am I completely crazy?!?!

TStew - you are not crazy. The healthcare system in the US is messed up. It often will pay for the treatment of all problems associated with obesity, but not for the treatment of obesity itself - completely nuts!! My insurance would pay for a penile implant if I needed one lol, and if I would become a drug addict, it will pay for my recovery, but it will not pay for anything that has to do with weightloss. I went to Mexico as well for my surgery and don't regret it for one second!! I did not use Dr. Aceves, but there are many on here who have and I have read alot of positive experiences described. As far as going back to work. I had my surgery on a Thursday, flew back home on Sunday and was back at work on Saturday. I think I had a total of 9 days off and I felt fine.

This forum is an invaluable source of information and support. No questions are stupid or asked too many times, this is a huge decision for everyone so the more you can know, the better experience you will have. So ask anything you want!!!!

Kathy

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
