Full time student, will surgery affect study ability?

Recommended Posts

I am a full time nursing student set to graduate in January 2011. I am having my surgery this December, thankfully a few days after my exit exam. However I am a little concerned because I am scheduled to take the NCLEX exam in Feb or March of next year, and I remember being told by my Kaiser Options leader that people are usually a little fuzzy headed for a couple months post op due to the severe calorie restriction, etc. Can anyone give me a little info about their experiences with this? Also, I am nervous about some of the other complications like dumping, etc that I have been told about. I will have about 1 week to recover after surgery at home, then will be headed back to the classroom a few days a week for a couple weeks of NCLEX prep. and am curious about how I'll feel sitting in a class for hours at a time so soon after surgery. I would appreciate any insight to ease my mind a little, or at least let me know what to expect so I can be prepared :) Thanks!

Hi, Great question, I am also a full time student and have one class to finish by Dec. 7th, then I'll be starting full time in Jan again. My surgery is Nov 1 and I cannot fall behind so I hope someone can answer your question. Good luck with your tests, I'm going for social work but I know how hard nursing classes are. Janine

I'm a full-time medical student and had the surgery 3 weeks before classes started. The first 2 weeks, I definitely wouldn't have been up to studying, at least not in the amount we have to do. But after 3 weeks I was fine.

First, CONGRATS on upcoming graduation and your surgery - wow! Redefining yourself, eh? I can relate, I had my surgery in Jan of this year and am a 3/4 time student - waiting to hear if I'm accepted to nursing school here starting in Jan. So, yes, you should be just fine. I had my surgery on a Monday, flew home to florida from Mexico on Thursday and went back to school that Saturday morning. I felt great and ready! I've never been fuzzy headed - if anything my head is clearer. If you're having surg in Jan, you will be absolutely fine and rarin to go by Feb or March. Your biggest challenge regardless of surgery is getting in enough time to study for the test; gauge your test date more on how ready you are for the test. You'll do great!!! Good luck and keep us posted!

Cheers!

Hi. I'm not a student but a teacher of little kids and I was back to work the next week. Had my surgery on a Tuesday and the next Tuesday I was back in the classroom wrangling the kids, playing with them, them playing with me, on my feet all day, etc... and I was just fine so I think you would be a-okay for hours of awesome lecture & lab time. :o) Good luck on your upcoming test and graduation!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
