18 day post-op and have gained 4 pounds......not sure why

Recommended Posts

I had my sleeve on Oct 5th, I lost 11 pounds during my 2 week pre-op diet and another 10 pounds the first 8 days after surgery. I have since gained back 4 pounds of the weight lost and I am not sure why.

I am eating the smushy/blended foods but have to eat about an ounce or so every hour or hour and a half to get the 50 grams of Protein in. I am basicly eating the same foods I eat and lost the 11 pounds pre-op but have gained 4 pounds eating them. I am open to any and all suggestions.

oh that is terrible i wonder what is going on. are you able to excersise yet maybe that's what it is. i'm sorry this is happening to you. it has to be very frustrating and it is my worst fear out of the whole ordeal of having sergury. to take this big step and only loose 20lbs or gaining weight. keep you head up and keep doing what you are doing you should see some results. God Bless

Hi Becky -- are you using a food diary? I use fatsecret.com because it lets me know the Protein, carbs, fat, and calories of everything I eat. It might be useful to track your food intake for a week or so to see what types of food you're eating.

Also, (not to be too nosey), but is it the time of the month? 2 weeks ago, I only lost 1.5 pounds and then the next week got my period. And then that week I lost 6.6 pounds. So it could be Water retention.

On the subject of Water -- are you getting in 64 oz?? I know my weight loss slows when I am not getting all of my water in.

I hope this helps :)

Hi- I have been keeping a food diary on the journal that the Dr gave me. I have getting 600 to 800 cals a day and 40 to 53 grams of Protein daily and keeing the fat grams down to 10 or less. I am not getting in but 32 to 48 ozs of water daily.

I haven't had a period in over 10 years as I had all my female reproductive organs removed.

I will up my water intake and see if that helps (lets hope). Thank you :-)

Don't feel bad. I had lost 21 lbs in the first 10 days after surgery and as soon as I went on the mushies stage, not only have I not lost but I have gained two lbs that just don't seem to want to come off. I know I am doing everything right so I'm not worried about it. I know I will start losing again soon. And I am way beyond the "time of month" deal so it's not that. Just keep doing what you are doing and it will come off. You can't continue to eat only 700-800 lbs and not lose eventually.

I really won't claim to even guess why you're stalled or gaining. However I did notice that your Proteins seem slightly low and your fat intake is very small. I've heard that when doing a High Protein regimen you have to eat fats as well.

I personally don't count my fats, however I do try to eat low fat when I can. Like when I add mayo to something, I eat light or whatever.

Also with this type of eating plan, you really must drink a lot of Water. It will flush the fat out of your system that your body lets go of.

Let us know how you pull through! It could just be an annoying stall. We all get those from time to time and really have no real rhyme or reason.

For me, I am a slightly slower loser than others, but my weight loss has been pretty consistent. I think the longest I went without any loss was about 5 days, but that was Water retention. Once that flushed out I was back to losing.

It could be a number of things, really, and you'll likely never know what it happened.

Transitioning to mushies/blended foods tends to cause most people to stall. I experienced a small gain at this point myself - about two pounds.

If you're constipated, something like Miralax will get things moving again. This could be part of your problem, too. I drink it every other day in a cup of hot tea and don't have that problem any more.

Whatever the cause, you know logically that you can't possibly be consuming enough calories to account for four pounds of weight gain. Wait it out, and I'm sure you'll be back on track in no time. While exercise is a good idea to shake your body out of a stall, I'd be taking it very easy just three weeks out and not doing much more than a brisk walk, if anything.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I gained 2 lbs, but I was drinking high calorie drinks and eating a few dum dum lollipops for 2 days. I've lost those 2 lbs plus 2 more and along with serveral inches. :) No worries my love!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
