Hello all!

This is all becoming very real now. I went for my initial consult on August 9th. I asked for the the Sleeve procedure and then I was told my insurance was a case by case bases so they put in a request. I went to the Pschy evaluation and passed the oral and test just fine. I received a letter about a month later that I was approved so I called the insurance woman to ask what is next and she said for Bypass, right? I was like NO, Sleeve. She replied with well your doctor does not usually do that. I was dumbfounded as he went over it in detail with me, showing me a pen and saying that is the size my stomach would be, gerhlin ect, ect. So then they had to resubmit to my insurance company with the right code, in the meantime I went to the sleep study and have been having phone counseling on nutrition once a week per my insurance company. Yesterday I heard the sleeve was approved and I set up the lung doctor appointment for the 28th and and ultrasound for the 26th and a session with a Dietitian on Nov 3. The insurance woman at the doctors office said to call her if the lung doctor clears me that day and we will set up a date. I am really pushing for this year as I am looking at no deductible vs 3000 if I go into next year. I do not anticipate any problems at the lung doctor as I have never smoked, don't have asthma and they told me there was no apnea on my sleep study.

I have been trying out all kinds of Protein Drinks and have begun to substitute some for meals. In Jan of this year I was at 271 and in August I was down to 238, I was totally shocked. I can only contribute that to giving up Coca Cola and really paying attention to healthy options.

I am on pins and needles hoping there are no more delays should they find something on my ultrasound or visit with lung doctor.

At this point in time, besides getting as date before the end of the year, my biggest concern is my husband. I am really starting to resent him as he needs this surgery more than I do and all he keeps worrying about is when I will be able to go out to eat with him again. (it is a daily thing for him) I have gone over everything with him and yet he keeps acting like it is not real or I will just give in. Honestly I am willing to give up my marriage to be healthy if he does not come around. He refuses to go to support meetings with me and really does not listen when I tell him what I need to do for this.

Is anyone else here with the Kane Center in IL??

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
