Dehydration?

Recommended Posts

I know we're supposed to be getting in about 48-64oz of liquids in per day. HA! I'm lucky if I get in 20oz. Drinking is such a huge issue for me. It makes me immediately nauseous. I worry that I'm flirting with dehydration and that is something I DO NOT want to deal with. No more hospitals for me. I am SOOOO thirsty ALL the time but I just can't get in the liquids I'm supposed to. I saw my doctor yesterday and he didn't seem overly concerned about it. Told me to eat more Popsicles and eat ice if I can but I just don't see me eating enough Popsicle to cover the amount of liquid I need. Has anyone dealt with dehydration?

Has anyone dealt with dehydration?

The first week or two post-op I had a hard time getting all my liquids in. Dehydration is not fun... For me it was just a matter of keeping some sort of drink in front of me at all times no matter where I went. It was a little awkward at first lugging around a Water bottle to places where you usually don't see that kind of thing (church, sales meetings, neighbor's house, etc.) but that helped out.

I'm about 5wks out now and am probably getting somewhere between 40 and 50oz/day. I'm still struggling to get to 64 too. Hopefully it will come with time.

Drink what you like. For me it has been important to have a favorite cup to go. At first I survived on diluted cherry koolaid which worked. Also hot green tea w agave, homemade chicken broth. Find what works. I could not drink Water much ... Everyone is different.

I know I lived in a dehydrated state before surgery. But now I make a fav cup of coffee and a koolaid to go every morn...and as the day goes I get iced tea or more koolaid. Now I try to drink 1glass of milk each day as well. I don't like alcohol or cokes much...maybe occasional sip of soda but too fizzy now and too heavy.

Listen to your body, make it fun with special containers that appeal to you, and don't allow dehydration to take hold.

Best wishes...
