Hi, I'm scheduled to have VSG surgery on 11-5 in Las Vegas. It's going to done on an outpatient basis at 8am and I will be released later that day. Has anyone ever had this done? Dr. Umbach is doing the surgery. I'm from Alaska and going to be visiting my sis in Vegas for 17 days and decided to have the surgery while I was there. It's about $5,000 cheaper on an outpatient basis. Wondering if this could be a mistake, and maybe should go in patient. The person that works in the doctor's office said she has seen people get up go down to the strip the next day and gamble. Sounds a little too soon to me. But what do I know. Anyone got any experience with doing this on an outpatient basis?

Hi there. While I personally did not have mine done as an outpatient there are some people who have and I hope they chime in.

My surgery was done at 7:30 in the morning and I left the hopsotal by 6:00 pm the NEXT NITE. I would have left earlier, but my potassuim levels ,because of the kind of IV the nurses were giving me became to high. With that being said. I am one of the people who hardly had pain, but I loved the fact I was in the hospital for just that short period of time. The nurses came by every two hours to check my vitals, to give me my injections of blood thinner, to change my IV of pain killer, to check my drain, to give me ice chips, to help me in every way. I felt comfort in knowing if anything went wrong after surgery at least I was still at the hosptial.

Like I said before there are some peeps who did have surgery as outpatients and they can get you their experience.

GOOD LUCK!!!!

Deb

Thank you so much for the information. It helps a lot. Maybe I should plan on at least doing like you did... I know I would feel better about the whole thing. Maybe I'll be like you and not have a lotta pain... but who knows anyway. And I don't care anything about going down to the strip and gambling the next day. I just want to be comfortable and okay before I leave the clinic/hospital. I've had surgery (not bariatric) before and it's nice to be taken care of in the hospital afterwards. BUT THE MONEY!! That's a problem.... well, I'll figure something out. Once again, thank you for replying to my post.

By the way, how did you do with your weight loss? And when did you have your sleeve done?

Hi,

I'm considering of having Dr Umbach do my sleeve. Do you know if they remove the drain same day? Also, can you tell me the outpatient price? I didn't know it was an option.

Thanks!

Hi, I'm scheduled with Dr. Umbach on 11-5-10. He quoted me $11,000 for outpatient and $15,000 for in patient. I was told he performs his inpatient surgerys on Wednesday at the hopsital where you stay one night and his outpatient surgerys on Fridays at the surgery clinic and get out the same day. There is a big difference in price by going home the same day... and now I'm wondering if I should try to get that extra $4,000 somewhere so I can have it performed in the hospital. I'm self pay. I don't know the answer to your drain question. I am awaiting a response from Dr. Umbach's office on a few more questions, and one was about the drain.

Do you live Las Vegas?

I checked with 3 surgeons and all of them offered the surgery outpatient. I went with Dr. Umbach and was very happy to not have to stay in the hospital. I was not given a drain at all so no concerns about that. The first 2 nights are pretty uncomfortable to say the least, but I had some mighty good drugs to help me through.

I have several friends who did this outpatient and were very happy to have done so (not all with Dr. Umbach). My two cents??? If you trust him to do your surgery, trust him to decide if outpatient is an option or if you need inpatient care.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
