Is TriCare standard better???

Recommended Posts

HI everyone

I was curious if your chances of getting the lap band through Tricare were better if you had standard. I know that with standard there is a co pay, but I would much rather co pay than pay out of pocket completely and start my new life. If anyone has any information or knowledge in this area, I would greatly appreciate it! :help:

I contact tricare every three months and right now they are not covering the lap band. Medicare and the VA do, I expect they will cover it in the near future. I'm not sure how much longer I will wait. Good Luck.

Thanks for the help. I am in the same boat. I am so tired of waiting on Tricare. However self pay is NOT an option for me. I am really prayerful that they will come around soon. I have heard conflicting stories about finding other drs to do fills once one had banded you. Maybe that's part of the dilemma with tricare. Anways, I wish you well on your journey as well! :)

Hi amberakamom

I'm not much of a military whiz so I may be wrong, but I believe Champus VA is only for retired military and my husband is active duty. It is my understanding from reading some of the other threads about tricare that tricare for life (also offered to retirees) and champus alread approve the band. But I my be completly off with that. I do appreciate the information though. Thanks

That is only for the VA and their dependants. I tried using it to get the band done already. I have google set up to get tricare news updates daily. When you read the header it says Tricare change # N/A

DadrillSsgtsWife, I'm in the process of trying to get TRICARE Prime to pay for the band. Keep in touch. I'll let you know how it goes.

So far, I know of one person who has the band through Tricare, but she also has Medicare (not sure whether it's A or . Her name is DivaMom and she was scheduled for banding yesterday.

A friend of mine has Tricare (she is military) and they covered RNY for her but not the band. She went with the RNY, but she has been sorry ever since. She has lost a lot of weight, but has never really felt good. I don't know why they cover RNY and not the band....seems idiotic.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
