Finally on the road -- i hope!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I've posted before but wanted to start a new thread, telling my story. I've been through the mill so far.

finally chose a surgeon about a few weeks ago and went in for my consults last week. had the usual worries: my bmi has to be over 50 for my ins to cover vsg and i was worried it would be 50 or less. i wasn't worried about the other consults, but maybe i should have been. went thru them all, nutritionist, trainer, psych. i've got a kind of funky psych history, though i've been great the last two years. well, that blew up in my face, so i spent the last two days in a total adrenaline fueled state of high anxiety. really bad. psych had to talk to my therapist, the whole nine yards, and then THEY had to make a recommendation about whether i was fit for surgery. awful, awful couple of days -- sick, couldn't sleep, etc.

However!! Got word on Weds afternoon from psych that he had decided to clear me, FNP who runs program called me Weds evening told me he would recommend vsg or rny NOT band, which seemed to be what psych was going to recommend (though not what he does, after all) and that i needed to pick one. so, i said VSG!!!!!!

FNP called me yesterday to go over my chart, my bmi is 50.77 which he says is "over" enough that ins will cover and he told me i only need one more piece of info before submission to ins co -- letter from pcp saying i was a good candidate. i know he'll write it b/c i went to see him before i even started going to seminars.

so, i seem to be on the road . . . hard to believe!!!!!!! finally starting to sink in today and i'm finally off the roller coaster and feeling hopeful and relaxed!!!!

sorry this is so long!! thank you for reading!!!! hope to have more news soon!

Ann

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
