Anyone had this procedure after taking blood thinners?

Recommended Posts

I had pulmonary embolism (x2) just under a year ago, and have been on Coumadin since (will be off soon). I have my first doctor consultation in 2 days. I wanted to know if any of you have had the gastric sleeve procedure after a similar situation. I don't have any

clotting risk factors, other than the obvious obesity. My emboli happened days after a serious surgery that put me off my feet for a few days, but prior to that I had been on birth control pills for 20 years. I'm off those now and really ready to move on with my life!

PS I'm new here! Hi!

Hi there, I wasn't on blood thinners, but I have a clotting disorder similar to von Willebrand's disease. Unfortunately, they have diagnosed me with an "idiopathic clotting disorder" because they can't find the cause or the specific Protein factor that is causing me to have a slow clotting time. I was given DDAVP the day before surgery, and a slow iv drip of the same drug to help prevent bleeding. It was kind of confusing because they gave me Lovenox on top of the DDAVP which was recommended by my oncologist.

Best wishes with your consult, and I'm sure they'll be able to take care of you.

Hey Deb,

I had a PE in 2003 I was smoking, on birthcontrol, and had a left ankle fracture which left me in a wheelchair for 3 weeks not to mention my obesity. I was on Coumadin/warfrin for about a month afterword. I told Dr Aceves about this and he wanted me to take lovenox for 2 days prior to surgery and 10 days after to prevent another clot. Soooo...the long winded answer is you should be fine, they will want you to continue your bloodthinners.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
