Question about Travel Post-Surgery

Recommended Posts

I'm scheduled to have my sleeve done in November. I have an event 10 days later that requires an hour plane ride. Is that do able or am I asking for trouble?

It sounds fine.

I went to Czech Republic from England for my sleeve and flew home 3 days post-op and the flight was 1hr 50 mins. I was tired but it was fine :)

Good luck! xx

That is very doable. I had my surgery in Mexico and flew home to Florida two days later. I was on a plane for close to six hours. You will just want to make sure you wear comfy clothes and maybe a pillow for your tummy.

Hi Candygirl;

I travel for work - a lot! Sleeved on 17th - flew to Chicago for work, 4 hour flight 9 days later for work. Pillow around tummy helped, grab a bottle of water/G2 gatorade that you can sip on during ride, loose clothes around waist. Check all bags except your purse because the airline I flew, the flight attendents were less than helpful to put things in the overhead.

Good luck!

You should be fine! I travelled 3 days post op, 2 planes of 2.5 hours each, and then drove 3 hours immediatly after getting off the plane.

Same advice as the others, comfy clothes, Water, ect!

Good luck!

Well, I called my surgeon and he said not to travel 6 weeks until after the surgery. Since I am paranoid/cautious to start off with, I'm going to heed his advice. I just pushed the surgery two weeks. While I want to have it done ASAP, I want to be safe. I figure in the big scheme of life, 2 week won't make a huge difference.

Thanks for everyone's advice, though!

I hopped on a plane 7 days post-op and it wasn't bad at all. Just make sure wherever you're going that you can get/bring the types of food that you're allowed to have. I flew for a work meeting and had to sneak out of dinner (to go to the grocery store for yogurt), and out of lunch (around the corner to a Soup shop). As long as you can do that, you should be okay.

Everyone is different, so it'd be interesting to see if others feel if they were ready at 10 days out. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
