Some good news today

Recommended Posts

I had my appointment with my GP today who said that I qualify under the NHS for the surgery and they have referred me to the nutritionist who will meet with me and go through the diet changes I need to make and also refer me to meet with the surgeon. I'm not 100% on the NHS process, but I was told I'm doing all the right things and they are happy that I'm making an effort to lose some weight.

They have decided to keep me on the Xenical for now even though it's not really doing anything. I've been constipated and had acid reflux ( the reflux happens shortly after I take the pill and it tastes like soap coming up my throat). She said if I haven't lost at least 4 lbs in the next month on it they will take me off it.

She also looked over my previous medical information which I brought today. She agreed I did previously have high blood pressure, but my reading today was 110/68 which she said was really good all things considered.

Thats excelent news! Xenical is a weight loss drug right? Why would they keep you on that when you are planning to go have VSG? I would think that they would want you on a drug for the shortest time possible. Well have fun with your apts and keep us posted

Hi Layla,

Yep Xenical is a weight loss drug. It basically works to punish you if you eat anything fatty. So I've been eating a low fat diet.

They are keeping me on it as it's all part of horse and pony show to show that I'm committed to making lifestyle changes. Some insurance/surgeons etc... insist on weight loss drugs prior to doing surgery. The NHS (or PCT in my area that controls NHS services in my area) require this.

However, I've been told that after three months if it isn't doing any good then they wont make me stay on it. Even though on the NHS I only pay £7 for the prescription (roughtly $10) it still cost them to keep me on it and there wont be a point for them if it isn't working.

It isn't do anything for your appetite though :-(

That's good you are now on the system. I too took Xenicall before surgery, lost a few pounds but that was it!

I had my first appointment with my GP to talk about the WLS today. However, I was extremely nervous about the appointment and the fact that I had a second interview for another job today didn't help the fact that my BP was 120/100. The appointment went well so I really had nothing to worry about but it was another big step in the direction to my sleeve. =0) I have gone to my interview and it went well, so again, worrying for nothing. Stress is my worst enemy. So now I'm ready to meet with my surgeon on Wednesday for my weight-in. super excited.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
