I was approved within 48 hours after submitting paperwork to Aetna. I assumed for inpatient, but I will have to double check on that now. Didn't know that was even a possible issue. I just called Aetna and verified. I am approved for inpatient. Currently I am approved for 1 day, the hospital would just need to call at time of service to get extended to 2 days. They said it was not a big deal.

I also have Aetna insurance. They had requested records from 2008 for a recorded weight and a one on one with a nutritionist. This was turned all into medical review on Tuesday afternoon. I had a call from the surgeon's office on Wednesday at 2 pm that I was approved-24 hours. Surgery is set for December 1st. My recorded weight from my appt was 232 and my BMI is 37.5. I am diabetic and have a mild case of sleep apnea. I was actually surprised how quickly I was approved.

I'M APPROVED!!! After 2 denials from Aetna, I finally got approved. I guess they had to work out with my surgeon's office which paperwork they were missing or when it was sent or whatever. Who cares?? I'm approved.

BUT...unfortunately because of some personal family issues, I can no longer do the 12/20 date I previously hoped for (and the surgeon's office graciously reserved for me). I will have to wait until Feb 2011.

BUT...I'm not mad at all. I am still losing on my self imposed pre-op diet and I have started working out 4x a week. So I am going to make sure that this time between now and Feb will be as productive as possible for my weight loss goals.

I'm just so happy I got approved I wanted to share it with you all!!!

I have Aetna and I've been reading a mix of requirements from people on three different forums. So I'm sure it all varies. I have also noticed that depending on who your surgeon is, he/she has a slew of requirements as well.

I have a surgeon whom requires more than what insurance requires. I am doing the three month supervision though. In the end, I'd rather have my surgeon require a lot more in order to make sure i get approved and so that she feels i am healthy enough and in the right mind set to have surgery.

my surgeon requires:

-1 meeting with nutritionist before surgery, 2 meetings after surgery

-10 cardiac exercise sessions (requires 2 before surgery, the rest is divided up however patient sees fit)

-requires some weight loss (did not mention how much)

-requires sleep study, EKG, endoscopy, chest xray, abdominal ultrasound, mental health evaluation

-1 Meal Replacement supplement

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
