Drinking During Meals

Recommended Posts

So, we all know this is a big no-no, but I do like to have a drink during my meals. It's a hard habit to break, but more than that I find that if I don't, I can't eat enough to get in my requisite daily calories and Protein.< /p>

Anyone else in the same boat?

IMO if you're doing it responsibly then I'd say don't worry too much about it. Now if you're doing this to the point where you are eating too many calories then it's a habit worth breaking.

I say you're ok and not to worry about it as much. Getting in enough calories to sustain a healthy body while still losing is OK.

"Drink Responsibly" :)

I don't know how detrimental this habit is to our weight loss, but if I can break this habit, ANYBODY! can do it. I was a hardcore "must have a drink with every meal" person preop. It was to the point that no matter how hungry I was I never sat down to eat without a drink. And if the glass got low or ran out, I would get up in the middle of my meal to get more. Water generally did not suffice either.

Amazingly, I just stopped cold turkey after surgery. I read someone's advice to not have anything to drink next to me when eating. I started out that way when I hit the puree stage and haven't looked back. I don't order drinks with my meals when eating out. It's easy in that situation to get a water brought to the table later if you're there long enough. I don't fix a drink at home until my 30 minutes have passed. I only take a sip immediately after eating when I need to swallow Vitamins or medication. If the food is getting stuck in your throat you may not be chewing thoroughly enough.

If drinking with your meals is allowing you to eat more, I would seriously consider working on this habit now. It may not be a big deal soon after surgery when you can't eat much, but when your volume increases and you get closer to maintenance it could make those last pounds much harder to lose.

I found it hard to break this habit too... but I stop drinking the moment I start eating.... so I get my pre dinner drink (if eating out) and drink that down, then put it to one side as soon as my 'meal' arrives.

Its hard, but when you think that it helps wash food thru the sleeve, thus you'll eat more, plus if you drink and eat you may risk stretching your sleeve as well....

I read that Protein lasts a lot longer in the stomach than carbs, hence the fact you feel fuller for longer, so if you can avoid any Fluid going in with your protein then you'll get the best nutritional stuff out of it and stay fuller for longer.

Good luck

I am one of those weird people who absolutely loves nothing more than a giant glass of icewater w/ lemon. More often than not these get brought out automatically at restaurants, so it's been especially difficult to abstain. Especially since it's been so hot out lately! I feel thirsty ALL. THE. TIME.

For me it's not the timing so much as the act of drinking itself. I actually really miss being able to gulp down a big bottle of smartwater on a hot day. These are just habits we have to break unfortunately.

My doc told me drinking up until your first bite is fine, but once you have food inside your stomach any more liquid is just going to sit on top and you'll get that "flooded throat" feeling.

I have not been motivated enough to break this habit. I really am not interested in stopping lol. I get a small drink of tea or even a clear soda and sip while I eat. I drink so little though, today it looked like I drank 1/8 of my drink. I am not going to sit and chug-a-lug while I eat but I do enjoy sipping. At home I will pour the tiniest bit of apple juice in a kid size cup and I hardly finish it with my Breakfast. I just enjoy drinks.< /span>

I am right there with you!! I'm thirsty all the time and I miss chugging some ICE cold water! It's the thing I have been craving the most lately.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
