Is this heartburn?

Recommended Posts

I had my sleeve on 9/9/10. Everything has been going great. Over the last day or so when I have eaten something that has Tomato in it, I have been getting a burning, painful feeling in my lower throat. I've never had heartburn before but I feel like this might be what the pain is from. My husband thinks if it was heartburn it would be lower.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like heartburn to me. To me, heartburn and acid are the same thing.

Sounds like acid. Is it with any other foods, or just acidic Tomato based stuff?

Are you taking a PPI?

I don't think I am taking a PPI because I don't know what that is. It seems to only happen when I have eaten tomato based foods.

yeah, like acid reflux. you could take pepcid or get on nexium.. but I know people with acid reflux usually try to avoid Tomato foods, spicy foods, etc.. I would guess now that we have a small stomach, once it's full (which isn't on much) then the acid production happens more easily and can back up? I mean that happened to me a lot before when I was very overweight and overstuffing myself, lying down too soon, all that stuff... talk to your doc. maybe you could get on nexium or just try to avoid the trigger foods? good luck!

PPI is a proton pump inhibitor. It keeps acid from producing in our stomachs. H2 blockers like Pepcid, zantac and others treat the symptoms of heartburn/acid reflux/ulcer issues.

With a PPI, it keeps the acid under control, and helps protect the staple line. You might want to talk to your surgeon about getting on something. I went on Prilosec about 6 weeks out.

I get the same exact feeling. I asked my doctors office about getting on a PPI, but they told me to take Tums, (which I have been since week one) and that does not even touch it. Then she says wait a couple of hours before going to bed after I eat, which after reading on here I knew that also, still I get it almost every morning around 4 am, and also throughout the day. How many tums can one person take. lol Maybe at my follow up appointment I will bring it up again.

That's just horrible. . . I hope they get you something. I told my surgeon if he didn't give me a RX, I was just going to go OTC anyway and take something. Reflux isn't something to play with especially with a healing staple line, and if it's ongoing Barrett's esophagus is a dangerous condition to risk.

I think this is acid reflux, I had an issue with this. My mother told me to make sure I stay away from Tomato juice because of the acid. Try taking nexium, it worked for me.

Wow, Barrett's esophagus, I never even thought about that. I had acid reflex most of the day today, and actually have it right now. Let me go eat those TUM's. lol Maybe I will go buy from pepcid or any other suggestions. If others are taking it, it can not be to bad for me. I will try calling the Doctors office again tomorrow. I don't know how much more of this acid stuff I can take. It actually affected me at work today. Thanks Tiffykins.

Pepcid and Zantac are h2 blockers, they simply treat the symptoms of heartburn/reflux. Get some Prilosec or Prevacid OTC instead if you want the acid to stop.

My directions on my Prilosec is to take on an empty stomach, and wait 1 hour before eating. I know it can take up to 14 days for the Prilosec to kick in fully. Have you tried Gaviscon to give you some relief? It might help more than Tums in the interim until you can talk to your doc.

Man I just got back from Wally world, as I have had acid reflux since 8:00pm, when I read this post. I went and picked up some Prilosec, but then read the box when I got home and says it does not work right away. After eating 6 Tum tablets you think it would ease up a little (NOPE). I may have to run back out for Gaviscon, I need sleep or I won't make it at work tomorrow, and I'm sure the boss wont like that. Thanks for the info. I think today has been the worst it has been and the longest I have had it, I actually had it on and off all day. If it don't go away I think I may cry.....

Most doctors put their patients on a PPI immediately after surgery. I am surprised your surgeon didn't put you on it right away.

I was getting pepcid through my IV and confused about why. I'm going to ask him today at my appt. if I should be taking something regularly. I plan on starting back on my creamy Tomato Soup on Sunday, and I don't want any issues!

I hope you got some sleep and felt better!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
