Did anyone else gain the first days post-op?

Recommended Posts

Hi I had my surgery Sept. 20th. BMI was 32 so not as much to lose as some. However!!!! I am up 5 pounds since I weighed myself on the day prior to surgery. And even worse, I am sooooo hungry and I don't think it is 'head hunger'. I've been hungry enough times in my life to know what hunger feels like and I absolutely wish I could have anything from a bran muffin to pizza. I was only having Water and broth til today when I added a sugar-free fudgesicle and some Jello. I could eat (actually drink) pretty much non-stop. I hope I didn't go through all of this and then not lose weight - lots of it and fast and without feeling like I'm starving.

Yes, I gained 7 pounds while in the hospital. I can assure you it wasn't from fine dining. lol. They had me constantly hooked up to IV fluids. My first night home I peed 5 pounds off! I'm sure you will have a simliar experience. I almost wanted to sleep on the toilet I was there so much.

Best of luck to you!

Yep, I gained a few pounds after surgery (5 or 6) didn't weigh myself until a month after that though, just keep on doing what you've been told to do and hopefully the hunger will go away and the weight will come down, good luck!

I also gained. It took me a good week to get below my starting weight. The IV fluids and my long flights really helped me retain Water weight.

Also, it takes a short while for the ghrelin to work it's way out of your system. It could be actual hunger, head hunger or acid. If I miss my Nexium for one day that night I'll feel like I'm starving and my stomach is rumbling - but it's only acid. Head hunger can be anything from a simple craving for a particular food, grieving large portions, or just being frustrated by the post op liquid diet and wanting to eat. I've never felt hunger post op, but I have had cravings around my monthly cycle, and about 8 days into the post op liquid diet I just had an overwhelming desire to CHEW food.< /p>

Everyone loses at their own pace. If you expect to lose everything quickly with no bumps in the road you're setting yourself up for disappointment. Very few people on here never experienced a real stall - lots of us have at least mini-stalls once a month.

You just had a surgery that makes it next to impossible not to lose weight. So long as you stick to the program, the weight is going to come off, but don't expect things to be a pound a day for the next six months. I felt like I was a slow loser until I realized that I'm less than three months out and more than one third of the way to my goal. That's pretty awesome.

I'm not trying to be negative or anything. I just experienced a LOT of disappointment early on because I really expected the weight to keep falling off at the pound a day rate I had early on. When I stalled out for two weeks around week three, I was horribly disappointed and depressed. But it's a normal part of the process for most people. Now I realize that I gain and stall during my cycle and likely will every month.

It sounds like you're doing a great job. Just focus on those liquids and stick to your plan - you'll be losing weight in no time.

They are correct. They pump you so full of fluids and then you have swelling from the trauma. You will lose weight!! I also take prilosec for acid.

I weighed 8.5 pounds more two days after surgery than I did on the day of surgery! I guess I'd had lots of IV fluids and some swelling. Was a little disheartened at first, until I found out it was not out of the ordinary.

I was hungery at first too. My body just needed more than I could give it on Clear Liquids. Once I got to mushies I was better. Now that I eat mostly solid prtein I am barely ever hungery.

also... I gained at first too (just like everyone said... IV fluids.. flight home... swelling). Hang in there. I was disheartened at first... I felt like after all I had been through I shoud have imediate results.

Youll feel better soon and the weight will start to come off.... I promise

take care

Not even remotely interested in food, but I would love to gulp down a big glass of something. Just feeling the desire to really wet my throat lol

I was up a bout 5 pounds when I came home and I have lost about 3. I can certainly tell I am swollen so i am not concerned.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I think I knew it but just wanted to be comforted by hearing from others with the same experience ... and it worked - I am most grateful.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
