Hi Sue,

Thanks for your response. My GP put my BMI at 56 at my appointment on the 11th. At the time she suggested surgery I wasn't really sure and have spent the last week thinking thinking it over. I've scheduled an appointment today for October 4th to start the process on the NHS.

How long have you had to go through this ? What have you had to do ?

Jen

Hi Jen

Well I had a long journey to getting my WLS BUT it may not be the same for you in Yorkshire.

My doctor referred to an Endocrinologist to double check that there was no other reason for my weight gain and also checked me for diabetes, sleep apnoea and many other co-morbities often associated with obesity. I then had to do a monitored diet program, diet pills etc to see if I could sustain weight loss in this way. (This was carried for over a year but I think the average is 6 months). In the end I was getting so down about it all I started over eating again. My BMI shot up and I then qualified for WLS surgery.... Not the ideal situation for anyone. So in all, by the time I get into surgery (Oct 2010) I would have been on my journey for over 3 years. BUT please don’t get down hearted when you read 3 years as I don’t think that is the norm. My Health Authority are very strict about who they allow to have Bariatric Surgery.

Your referral will go to your local PCT, which is where the funds for your surgery will come from. They in turn will send you a letter and advice which hospital will do your surgery and then that hospital will contact you in due course to start their procedures with you.

I hope that has helped???

I don’t think my journey is typical in terms of the time it has taken. I had to go this route as I don’t have the money to go privately. I’m sure your journey will be a lot easier.....

Wishing you all the best

Take care

Sue

I'm new to the forum so apologies if I've posted this in the wrong place.

I'm in the UK and looking for other people who are considering the sleeve or already going through the procedure who are in the UK.

I have a BMI of 56 and my GP has offered me weight loss surgery. I've been battling my weight for 10 years and I'm strongly considering the Sleeve.

Thanks for reading.

Hi and welcome. I am in the UK too, in Bucks. I had mine done privately in the Czech Republic in May 2009. I have been very happy with the outcome. I didn't even attempt the NHS route as I wanted it done quickly and I had a spare ?5K luckily.

Hi, I had mine done as a revision from band just over 12 months ago in Sheffield. I paid privately for my band and was very lucky to get my revision funded by the NHS. Most people are not so lucky but there were other issues involved. I have no regrets. You will find this site very useful and informative although advice may sometimes be conflicting. In general most people's experiences are fairly similar though. Just ask if you have any questions :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
