How long did you have to miss work?

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone!

I am unexpectedly going to have the sleeve soon due to a lapband slip. I was wondering how long you were down so I can have an idea for how much work I will miss. I am a little nervous about telling my boss, but my doc says the band needs to come out. Thanks for any advice!

I had surgery on a Tuesday and my follow-up appt was on the following Wednesday. I had originally planned to go back to work the next day (that would have been post-op day 9), but my surgeon left it up to me and I went back to work on the next Monday, post-op day 13. I decided to get a little more rest as I was still feeling less-than-energetic from being on Clear Liquids for the first 2 weeks.

You might want to post this in the "band to sleeve revision" section of the forum...

As far as my surgery was concerned, I was off work for a week. One week after surgery, I flew to California for a 1-day meeting. Aside from having to sneak out from the catered lunch and finding some strained Soup, it worked pretty well. I'd say I really felt back in the swing of things by about week 2.

Keep in mind that you're not supposed to lift more than 8lb your first week out of surgery, and no more than 20lb for the next 3-4 weeks after that. If your job involves anything like that, then you you might need more time off.

Good luck!

I had my surgery on a Tuesday, and went back to work the next Monday- it wasn't easy, but I made it through....I basically sit a computer all day though, so if you do something more strenuous, I would definitely take maybe 10 days at least. I am 12 days out right now, and feeling pretty good. Good luck on your surgery!

Everyone recovers differently, and though I was technically feeling well enough after one week, I wanted to get a little rest before going back to the office. I work for my surgeon, so I didn't want our patients to see me and think "wow, she looks like death warmed up." Because, when I'm tired or lacking energy, it is written all over my face and no amount of makeup can mask it.

I only took one week off but looking back I wish I had taken 2 weeks. I was tired and it would have been good to have had more rest before returning to work.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
