Had Lapband surgery - feeling funny in the stomach. Did you have the same feeling?

Recommended Posts

I had lapband surgery on Tuesday. It feels like there is a ball in my stomach and its hard to swallow. I've been taking my medication chopped up really fine. It feels like something is stuck and I don't know what it could be. Do you think it is swelling? The doctor said I have no restriction and will not have any until my first fill in a month. Still feels like a ball is in my upper abdomen. Thanks for the input

Well I hope it is normal, cause I feel it too. And regarding restriction, I have it. I know it is probably from swelling, but it is there. Just take it really slow.

I have to sip things really slowly all day long, and have only managed to get in 2 shakes a day with a little Water in between. I can manage a few bites of pudding or baby food, but that gives me the "ball" feeling. I was banded on Monday, and it is still the same today.

If it is not normal, then I guess we are two abnormal people on the same road....

Thanks Poodles. I think it is normal, just a really funny feeling. When I get the "ball" feeling I think it is the point of being full. That is how I am working it now.

Sounds like swelling to me. I hope your doctor meant you don't have restriction from your band yet - I had a LOT of restriction from swelling for a long time post op.

Good luck.

Yep, this is normal and I'm sure it's from swelling. Just take things very slowly and be good to yourselves!!

Thanks everyone. Yep, he said the band isn't tightened yet so I don't have restriction. Sounds like this "ball in the stomach" feeling is normal. I have no hunger. Did you force any liquid supplement down (protein shake) or just liquids like juice, broth, Water?

Swelling indeed. Take advantage of not having an appetite to lose some extra pounds before you appetite returns. GOODLUCK with your new best friend (the band).

Julie: I have not forced anything. If I get that feeling I stop. Then wait. Seems that I am less restricted in the morning, so I try to get in a lot of liquid in the morning, and take it easy when that feeling hits.

Be careful not to do something that will hurt you. Don't force it. Just go with the flow...

Thanks Poodles. I am feeling better today. I'm just on Advil liquid gel caps which seem to be helping the stomach swelling. Lots of liquids. I don't feel weak so I guess my body is working off of stored fat at this point.

I am two weeks post op & had that same feeling. But its all gone now, except when I get full. That is my signal that I have eaten to much! This band is a God-Send! I am so thankful for this site & this band...it is saving my life! All will be fine I'm sure, the swelling & tightness will go down. Good luck!!!

Thanks Cookgal. Sounds like you are doing fantastic. I feel great. I'm shocked that I feel so good so soon. I go in for my post op next Thursday. I know I have lost at least 5 lbs so far. I love not being hungry. Looking forward to everything that is to come.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
