Did anyone get their hair back?

Recommended Posts

I'm not referring to the Hair loss after the sleeve, but my hair has all but disappeared. I actually have to wear a hairpiece, and I have worn wigs in the past. Is there any chance it might grow back...at least a little bit after I lose the weight?

By the way, I haven't been sleeved yet.

have you done any research about what is causing your Hair loss?

oh yes. I have been to several dermatologists. The first told me it was more imagined than real...lovely. The second told me it was inherited male pattern baldness. As far back as I can trace none of the men in my family are bald (dead or alive!)

I went to another dermatologist who supposedly specializes in hair loss and she said she had no idea why. I have pcos. I have insulin resistance, high blood pressure, facial hair, obesity, lack of menses, etc... :scared0:

I had problem with my hair not that I was losing it, but that it was not growing. I would need a hair cut like every two years (no kidding). I quit taking certain medication, and it all of a sudden started growing again.

What about your thyroid? Are you on any specific medications that could hinder hair growth?

You can check with your pharmacist to see if there is anything you're taking that could cause these symptoms.

Ugh what a topic this one is. . . I'm 9 months out (can you believe it!) and STILL losing my hair, not as bad as before but still a lot of hair! I swear I could have made 2-3 wigs out of all the hair i've lost! It's terrible, I'm just glad i have long hair, it's thinned out very much, but i don't have bald areas (thank goodness). . . i'm hoping it will stabilize soon. . .

It does does does sound hormone related. Once I had this problem and my doctor said I was not ovulating. He put me on the pill to get my hormones moving again, when I went off of it I immediately got pregnant and got a ton of hair. I think what started it for me was getting a deprovera shot...I cannot get these at all as my period slowed and I did not have one for a long long time like 2 years. After only 1 shot. I have a very bad thyroid deficiency, and I know if I don't take my medicine this can happen quickly so take my medicine faithfully.

Have you heard of natural hormones? Might be good to read up a bit. Sure sounds hormone related like too much testosterone, etc. Maybe go to a doctor that specializes. Get it fixed. And then get pregnant and you'll regrow your hair. haha It worked for me.

I was very afraid of losing hair again with the surgery, and I did lose some, but it was a different kind of Hair loss. Kind of like it falls out but is regrowing very quickly. I liked the comment someone made about the chia pet or whatever...that was funny. And true!

I also have PCOS and have had hairloss really bad. My dermatoligist prescribed Finasteride (generic Propecia). You can't use this or even touch the pills if you plan on becoming pregnant. This keeps the hair from falling out. Then he told me to use Rogain for men once a day, or the Rogain for women 2x a day. This will make the hair grow. I choose to use the men's once a day and I put it on before I go to bed. If I put it on after I wash my hair in the mornings my hair tends to look dirty. I have noticed that it helps when I make sure I take the pill and spray the Rogain everyday.

Thanks for all your input. I hope I remember to address everyone's comments.

I have had my hormones checked. My thyroid is fine. My testosterone is in normal ranges. My estrogen is really high, and my Vitamin D was very low. I take prescription Vitamin D. I'm not on birth control, and I haven't tried any type of hormone. I did try Rogaine but it absolutely sets my scalp on fire!! I am one of the rare few that can't use it. :lol0:

I was just hoping against hope that once I get the sleeve and lose the weight, it might magically grow back. I'm so embarrassed about my hair loss. It is really BAD. I don't go in public without my hairpiece. Very, very few people even know it's not my hair. I just wish I didn't have to wear it at all. There are so many times when it's a problem...airports, Disney World, when I had an MRI (metal clips so I couldn't wear it), the beach, when I do have surgery, etc. etc. It's just so humiliating. :lol0:

I have researched and researched, there's really nothing that will help me. I was just hoping that maybe some have experienced regrowth after weight loss.

I totally know the feeling! I started loosing my hair when I hit 28 and was diagnosed with PCOS at 30. Other weighty women in my family also lost their hair starting at around 30, more pronounced for us as we have very thick hair when we are young. I have noticed that after the initial increase in Hair loss after surgery, it did slow ... alot. It seems thicker now then it did before, but I'm not sure if this is true or not. I'm hoping some will grow back soon.

**I'm having ovulation issues too. May I ask what type of BC you were on? I've never taken BC before, but since my fertility was a huge factor in getting my surgery (and doc says no pregnancy for at last a year); I thought it might help jumpstart my periods and ovulation so when my weight stabilizes, my body will be ready.

Hey Jessica, I had surgery in January and since then I've had a period on my own every month. I've never done that, I would usually have 1 a year on my own before. But since surgery i get it on the 30th of each month. You might not need to get on a bc pill to regulate. When I was taking bc I was on Reclipsen and had no issues with it. Good luck!

It depends on the cause. If it's genetic, chances are it's not coming back. If it's hormone related, it might come back. If it's from medication, you may not need them when you lose the weight and again, it may grow back. If you are not planning on having anymore kids, men's rogain has been known to help. I would ask a dermatologist first though.

My daughter was losing her hair so much that it was very thin and she had a bald spot in the front. I was reading about the effects of eating drinking soy products. She had been drinking soy milk for over 4 years! She stopped and now 3 months later, she is no longer loosing hair and I can see a little Hair growth on her bald spot. She would have a hand full of hair every time she showered, and now, it's only a few hairs.

Before surgery I was on meds to boost my estrogen due to having pcos.. One of the side effects was hair loss.. And yes my hair did thin out. I under the impression that the high estrogen is what makes your hair fall out. I was the opposite with the high testosterone and SUPER thick hair. My hair is thinning but its not so bad yet I am 4.5 months out and thinning at my hair line. Hopefully it doesn't last long or get bad.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
